The system used by the oil industry requires a sophistcated anaylsis of a collection of forecasting medium from around the world to bring together a reliable and stable forecast.

The met office however have a bit of wet seaweed, some fir cones and an old dear with a dodgy knee who can feel it in her bones.

[rant] The UK Met office is part of the Military. It is funded by general taxation. However it also presents itself as as actively seeking commercial enterprise, with a stated aim of turning a profit. This is F**ked up. Science that is done for the common good, funded by all tax payers, should not be for sale. Hundreds of years of theory and data that has already been paid for should not be for sale to the highest bidder. [/rantover]

If you're going to "rant" at least be right. The Met Office is a trading fund, ie it has to create its own turnover or it will no longer be able to exist. About a third of its funding comes from the MOD. Labour considered privatising it, investigated the idea more than once and came to the conclusion that the benefits, both financial and otherwise that it brings to the UK far outweigh any "saving" that would be made by flogging it.

An independent report from 2007 showed that for every £1.40 of public money invested in the Met Office's public weather service alone, they returned £10 in savings to the taxpayer.

Congrats :P

But sadly MetCheck is not looking that positive at the moment. They say:

From 18 Jun To 27 Jun

The third and final wave of the 'European Summer Monsoon' brings more wet and windy weather to the UK with further heavy showers.

Confidence: 77%

Boo :P

Erm, this thread appears to be on page 4. Yet it's a beautiful, sunny day. The kind that makes you want the next 5 weeks 4 days to fly by in the blink of an eye.

I'd love a scorcher this year, although i'd probably settle for a repeat of 08 and 09.

Yeah, gorgeous today. This is what we want. Blue skies, all blue skies all the time.

And in support of this, I think you should change your login name to "Josepipe Ban".
