Heavy Sunday

If you mean the heavier acts will be more spread across the days and stages then I agree. If you mean that we will see an end to big metal headliners I disagree. The only reason they didn't get one last year was because there were none available of the stature the orginizers wanted (and we know they approached Green Day and AC/DC).

I dont think system of a down would headline the main stage at reading/leeds. They were a popular band but hardly massive. I also dont think you could put them down as legends. I would say their popularity is closer to kaisers, prodigy and bloc party, than arctic monkeys, kings of leon and radiohead.

System of a down have a massive fan base but haven't been around for or done anything for years is what you are essentially saying! That isn't a good thing!! It's not like rage or fnm where they have a huge well know back catalogue to draw from.

I personally don't think they would ever be more than a support. But then when you see some of the bands that have headlined in the past....

Darkness, pixies, frans ferdinand, razorlight...

Maybe they could headline!

I've been thinking about this after reading the title of the thread a few days ago

- and just wondered would a really heavy old school rock day on all the stages on Sunday be a way of keeping the disco kids out, bring in an older age range - and perhaps halt the Sunday night mayhem?

A whole bunch of old boys aren't gonna stand for kids going a bit mental are they?

What's your opinions?

So on that basis if marilyn manson split up and reforned 4 years later would they headline as well, because i wouldnt say soad were more popular than them.

To people who say kasabian couldnt headline, so does that mean that if they split up for 4 years they would get an automatic headline slot?? Because they are bigger than soad were before their hiatus.

I think people think every band thatc reforms is going to be promoted up the line up. Most of these reformed bands who headline the likes of leeds, glasto, v and t were actually headlining festivals before they split up. Someone like the libertines would be an exception but look at the publicity the libetines have had since they split up, its been far more than soad.

Again I repeat (and i am happy to debate) what makes soad go into the group with massive sellers arctic monkeys, kings of leon and radiohead. As opposed to the very big seller group with kaisers and prodigy. Rememebert the kasiers are a amassive band as well but doenst mean they can headline.

By the wya I like that we cant agree as well.

The 'classic' rock Sunday at Download this year was a massive success IMO. Maybe it was a better fit there due to the Fri & Sat being pretty heavy so it was a good was to chill on the last day.

The inclusion of a heavier headliner definitely changes the audience demographic, this year the Arctics, Kaisers, KOL combo appealed to lots of casual fans & an audience that would normally go to the V fests. Loads of people I know went to Leeds for the 1st time this year instead of V as V had a poppier line-up than usual & Leeds was more radio friendly. It's all well & good saying 'the heavier bands were still there, just spread out' etc but it's the acts on which the festival sold that matters. If there's heavier acts in the lock up, in the R1 tent or lower down main stage the average punter ie. not someone who posts on here. Doesn't know & doesn't care, you ask the casual fans who's playing at R&L this year? & they'll tell you the headliners & maybe some bigger acts headlining the tent or 2nd/3rd main stage.

In my experience it doesn't appear to be the hardened festival goer, regardless of their musical preference that are likely to cause trouble. The experienced festival goer (usually) buys into the whole 'festie spirit' thing & is the person that will talk to strangers in the campsite, help you put up your tent if you're struggling etc. The casual fan is the person who's bought a ticket to hear 5 songs they know off the radio, got wrecked within 3 hours of being there & has no idea of how to conduct themselves in such an environment.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
