BLINK 182

Honestly, insult that Pixies booking, or their performance, and you’re just making this argument look even more bizarre.

Saying that Blink 182 are better than the Pixies, should be grounds for some kind of capital punishment.

The Pixies were shit. Lots of people who go to festivals grew up listening to Blink 182. Blink 182 practically invented pop punk. I'm not a huge fan of Blink, but booking them as high as the Pixies who were imo absolutely dire in 2005 makes sense. Just because you're a fanboy of a certain band who can't stand them being put on the same level as a band you dislike is no reason to tell everyone that they're wrong.

Grow up.

Absolute crap.

If blink 182 invented punk then what the hell did bands like the Ramones, The Undertones, The Rezillos, The buzzcocks, The Descendants, Husker Du & The Replacements do!??? Pop Punk isn't a 90s thing. It was a subgenre which began to emerge in the late 70s when the quasi anarchy of first wave punk got old fast and many 3 chord rock bands returned to the joys of writing pop songs again.

blink 182 in no way invented pop punk, they may have popularized it (off the back off The Offspring and Green Day) for a new generation, but they certainly did not invent it.

This thread is Readings answer to the little kiddies that argued ‘Faith No More’ shouldn’t headline Download’.

I can’t believe you guys are arguing that Blink 182! are more worthy headliners than the Pixies!!!!, Rage Against the Machine!, Pearl Jam!, and the Smashing Pumpkins [first appearance].

You guys are seriously f**ked.

Are you stupid? Nobody is saying their better though if they do hold that opinion fair enough. But they would certainly draw a much bigger crowd than pixies or Pearl Jam, Pixes apparently had a tiny crowd.

The average Reading goer is around the 19-23 age, and I think for a majority of these people Blink would be a massive draw. Their headline status depends really on how successful the tours sell out across the world as well as their reliability when it comes to playing and what other headliners are available.

plus whoever said blink 182 invented pop punk is obviously an idiot. even the simular bands around from the pop punk explosion were doing that style waay before them ( green day, the offspring, NoFx etc) and even they didnt even invent the genre

Complete reverse for me :) I was about 12 when All the small things came out and although I liked that song, I really didn't like the whole pop punk scene including Blink. I dont know why that's changed, it could be nostalgia, it could be that they aren't in my face all the time like they seemed to be or it could just be that my tastes have changed. Either way I can't wait to see them this time around.

I have a gut feeling next year's line-up will be heavier as a response to the complaints about this year.

Well, there are still heavy bands this year but all of them with the exception of Deftones could easily do V.

well said mate, I'm in the same boat.

they're not a band i take very seriously, But I listening to them brings a nostalgic smile to my face.

Most of the music I listen to is either a bit avant-garde or obscure, I love scraping the barrell of what last fm has to offer me, but you have to be able to appreciate music that is made with a bit of a sense of humour. They didn't invent pop punk, far from it, But I don't think there is any other band that sums up the "americain pie" era quite as well.

whoever it was that said you can define whether or not someone has a good and wide appreciation of music by whether or not they like blink-182 can f**k right off.

I disagree I think that the only complaint that would have made the festival change for next year would be if people had complained by not buying tickets. That hasnt happened and if the organisers can sell out a festival by catering mainly to the indie fans i dont see them changing.

If yoy are too old to have had blink soundtrack your teenage years, then fairenough.

But otherwise, you should be able to appreciate the humour and disregard they had for pop-punk stereotypes. Blink are brilliant fun & a great summer band. Not only that but very good musicians, travis is one of the best mainstream pop drummers to have come about in the past 10 years.

Im 32 and love Blink. People who discard them as crap, just don't get it, its not like they're trying to be the Beatles or Radiohead, its self confessed dumb pop punk, any one who can't get any joy from their music has no soul.

I do take issue with the 'Not only that but very good musician' comment though, they're properly rubbish bar travis.

    • Would Slayer & Gojira both headline Hellfest? I think Deftones & Slipknot will be in Europe again.
    • Had a dig at what splits might look like (for Leeds):   Fri -    Main - Chase and Status / Florence / Role Model / Blossoms (SG) / The K's / Arthur Hill / Dylan John Thomas / Westside Cowboy / The Clause   New Stage - Kneecap / Kettama / Duke Dumont / Holly Humberstone / Paris Paloma / December 10 / Violet Grohl / Alex Spencer / Kilu   Sat -    Main - Charli XCX / Fontaines / Skepta / Geese / Skye Newman / Keo / Overpass / Rose Gray / Unpeople   New Stage - Declan McKenna / James Marriott / DJ EJ / Florence Road / Clementine Douglas / Cardinals / Bleech 9:3 / Vilanelle / Day We Ran    Sun -    Main - Dave / Raye / Sombr / ??? (Gunna at Reading) / Kingfishr / Nine Vicious / Maisie Peters / Slayyyter / Clara La San   New Stage - Jade / Josh Baker / Rossi / Absolutely / Speed / Gurriers / Basht / Cruz Beckham & the Breakers / Ruby Roberts    I'm guessing alongside the Warehouse there's likely going to be another stage as there's a number of smaller acts not included in those two stages above (possibly just BBC Intro)
    • but you could say that for many fortunately some are prepared to drop
    • But it’s still an hour to go and the line grows every minute
