Next years headliners.

They headlined Wireless festival last summer, and on the whole, that provides artists more than big enough to headline Reading. They have a massive fanbase here. They also have loads of credibility, which goes a long way to determining whether your headlining material.

The reason I want them to headline is because they wouldn't be a typical choice for Reading. They have the necessary mainstream appeal to pull it off, they definitely have the popularity and the reputation as a live act.To have all that, and not be a guitar based band, would make them an interesting headline act. I doubt many would really oppose them and it'd draw a massive crowd from the 'indie' section.

As a Saturday night headliner, they would be perfect. I just like the idea of something alternative. Most of the bands being mentioned on this thread are incredibly conservative choices. Daft Punk would provide variation without being a big gamble.

Just to add,you could replace Daft Punk with the other acts I've mentioned, such as Kanye,Wu Tang etc and its the same argument for me.Something different.

But Daft Punk are a lot bigger a gamble than most other bands in this thread. FR know the festival will sell if they book names that aren't a gamble. The problem is that they are a variation from the norm. Look at Jay-Z from Glasto this year for the perfect example. I think that sadly, you've got to be a guitar based band to headline now, despite many on here wishing otherwise.

The headliners of Wireless this year (I'm not 100% on this btw) were Jay-Z, Morrissey, Counting Crows and Fatboy Slim. None of those names would headline R&L.

Just for the record, Daft Punk are still on my 'bands to see' list, wasn't in the country when they did Wireless Leeds last year.

All big enough though(Cept arguably Counting Crows.)My whole point here is that they could really go for something alternative considering that they are safe in the knowledge it will sell out,to keep things fresh. The reasons for Glasto struggling to sell tickets were numerous, but I doubt Jay Z headlining was one of the main ones.

Daft Punk represent something that isn't that much of a gamble, its only one night after all ,and I'm pretty sure they would be met with widespread approval for a Saturday night slot.Reading's got a history of non rock bands playing anyway. I can't imagine many complaining. They bring an amazing show and have the crossover appeal and the credibility, which is vital.

Maybe its just wishful thinking. I'd love the atmosphere they would bring though.

Festival republic have no need to gamble or try something different. Reading/leeds, v and t in the park are all commercial festivals with safe headliners. If its not broken theres no reason for them to fix it. If people want to see something different in terms of headliners there are lots of different options. With reading/leeds you know exactly what your getting.

daft punk is one of the only things that would have me back at the festival next year, anyone who's seen them reckons nothing comes close to seeing them live, and the alive album always puts a stupid big grin on my face  also, it's criminal that the prodigy haven't played in years, seeing them at a festival is just pure carnage!

daft punk are unlikely, but they would bring more publicity to the festival - look at how much coverage the whole jay-z/glastonury thing got.

I, however, don't want them to play, cos they would only do one festival if they play, and Im not doing reading ever again, and probably not doing leeds anytime for the foreseeable future.

Oasis said they are doing some big next summer, but as they have not arranged any manchester dates for their current tour, i think its glastonbury headlining and/ or 10 nights at the MEN arena. Can't see them doing R/L anyway, but if either of those 2 options turns out to be true, they definately wont be at bramham or little johns. (Incidently, if they do glastonbury, my money says that Blur will headline on another night.)

Remember the formula that is used every year - indie band, modern rock band, old rock band. almost every year its used.

Aerosmith or ACDC as the "oldies"

arctic bloody monkeys as generic indie band

Slipknot or green day as modern rock band

At a pop festival, daft punk would have huge appeal, but at reading and leeds, it would be odd. yes, they are Alternative, but they just aren't really rock. can you honestly see a mosh pit or wall of death for "One More Time" or "Digital Love"? They could definately play glastonbury, V or TITP/ Oxygen, but not R/L. They simply are not the right kind of act given the history.

Smashing pumpkins and Pearl Jam have more appeal to indie and rock fans, but less appeal to the pop-loving masses. So, in a very wishy-washy liberal diplomatic way, you 2 (edgar and hearing aid) are both right.

But daft punk wont play.

People will just put 'generic' in front of the word 'indie' whether the band is generic or not won't they?

Anyway, my guess is that the people saying Daft Punk wouldn't appeal to the indie kids (that make up most of the festival crowd) are the same who said RATM wouldn't. I guarantee you Daft Punk would be a popular choice. I don't think they will though, just because there's no actual evidence towards it and there's 4 or 5 bands that are almost certain to headline, in my head.

Arctics

KOL

Green Day

AC/DC

Foo Fighters

Slipknot and Green Day "modern rock"? Is this the late 90s?

Anyway, I really think Festival Republic should really book R.E.M. Would be a major coup, and would follow in the pattern of old American Alternative Rock heroes being headliners which we've seen forming over the years (Pixies, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, RATM).

I don't think Daft Punk would create much controversy if they were booked. Part of the controversy surrounding Jay Z is that he's a controversial man in himself, whereas Daft Punk, I've heard nothing controversial from. But I just can't see it happening, as well as they'd go down.

rem arn't even a major coup anymore unfortunately, did u not hear about them having to downside from a stadium to a tiny arena (and yes that is an oxymoron, but the cia is small for an arena sized venue), even played second fiddle to the verve!

there's no point arguing about daft punk though, as they arn't going to play, and people that don't like daft punk tend to be lacking in a soul, so f**k em

I wasnt there, but surely Stone Roses reading 96, goes down as the worst gig in the history of music? Isnt that considered like....a fact? They wouldnt be asked back!

Realistic headliners?

Muse, Oasis, Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, REM, Kings of Leon, Verve, Kaiser Chiefs, Guns n Roses, the Who, Libertines, Blur

take your pick! (whats good or not is obviously relative, but if the 3 headliners do not come from this group, i will either be very angry, very surprised or very happy).

Doh! 2 replies in a row.

I think Daft Punk could safely headline the festival and not be controversial. If they can headline Coachella as well as they did then Reading/Leeds would be a great show. They are also working on a new album...

I think AC/DC are a shoe in for next years festivals and will headline either Reading/Leeds or Download.

    • Another note, if I didn't mention the food in the arena for main stage is right at the back. Bands wise they do very well for but as a festival so far they pros are outweighed quite heavily currently for me.
    • On another note for RIP as an event, there is some good things but there are so many things people going to UK festivals would hate and how far behind they are.  Consistent network and water, beer and pretzel like food is brought around to buy in the crowds. Topping up on the wristband is good. The camping and food arrangement is not good, you really need cooking kit. Water points inside the arena are bonkers, water points in camping are a faff unless you are close enough in general camp. Merch stands are crazy. You MASSIVELY need to think about your lidl shop for camping and try and do it so you've one stop. It's definitely worth it getting to a camping shop here, picking up a rolley between your mates and stacking it for the walk back....lidl is cheap though, not hard getting in but Thursday queues getting in and into the camping is mad. You have to register first for a wristband as well leaving any bigger bags behind so pull to a side if only two and do it separately. I was joining a WhatsApp group for solo camp so went with the flow but I've learnt. Had it been me or just two my tent would have been down much quicker.  Big final note, I got a fresh and black 3 man from decathlon before coming and put in bigger suitcase with my airbed and sleeping bag...do this. Take a smaller option for your clothes. If you go to Munich first, book your train to Nuremberg as far in advance as you can....very important!....it hikes crazy. Probably bettee overall for baggage sizes to do BA both ways but you do then need to go back to Munich after too. Use the B&B hotel hbf the night before....its very nice, comfortable, cheap and within 10 minutes of the station which also serves as a transport stop 15 minutes from the registration.  Get up literally like 5am with everything back the night before, shower and go. Transport is free anyway for festival ticket holders during the duration.  Would I just choose to travel in each day and back to a hotel?, on the basis of sleep and getting accommodation cheap enough for 3 nights i might just do especially if I picked the ticket up early enough. It doesn't feel like a festival in a normal sense....unless you are in general yoi have to exit on the paths outside the camping to walk down and in which also applies for getting water so have a stock up. Toilets are in the camping.
