Dear Simon and Sofia
As you know, we here on the forum are the nicest and most well-informed music fans and festival goers around. You know that, because year on year you continue to create the best festival line-up in the country. Well done.
Whilst, therefore, it would be remiss of us to criticise your superb curation, we feel we must draw to your attention one small 'error'.
Other Lives have garnered such a following since their announcement, that for them to play on the Tipi Stage would pose significant safety risks to festival goers and performers alike.
For this reason we see no alternative but for them to be moved to a 1 hour slot on the Garden Stage whilst the sun gently sets on the day.
Many thanks for your help in this matter. We look forward to seeing the change in the Stage times and allocations in the next day or two.
Best wishes
The End of the Road Forum Members (yes, all of them)

But what's so great about this band? I don't understand

Ben, I just came back here to make exactly this thread but you beat me to it! Having had first hand experience of their brilliance last night I can confirm that this is exactly what is required.
In fact there is another option you didn't mention that would be just perfect and that would be a Sunday night slot on the Garden Stage starting somewhere round about 22.30...
What's so great about them? Trust me, see them at EOTR and you'll understand!

Just about everything, LJS. Apart from the cover of the new record which is a bit rubbish (the cover of the first, S/T album is lovely...), they are just fab. Brilliant vocal, huge washes of excellent orchestration underpinning beautiful and varied melody. Lots of minor key stuff, which I like. Check out 'Black Tables' from the first record and 'Dust Bowl III' from the new record 'Tamer Animals'. TBH you could pick pretty much any two tracks from the two records and you're unlikely to think 'meh...'.
It's rare for a band to 'hit' me the way these guys have. It happens less than once a year (or three). As you may have gathered, I love 'em.

I'm with ljsawyer, don't see what's so special about this band. They're ok but don't blow me away. Personally i think out of those in the Tipi that day that Nathaniel Rateliff should be the one moved, him or Daniel Martin Moore.
Different strokes for different folks i suppose. (yes, i still come out with early 90's phrases
)

Wha' choo talkin' about, Geordie?
Me too (though mine was late '70's/early 80's).
But about Other Lives you're wrong, clearly.
See, I'm back and we can return to insulting and disagreeing with each other in an altogether more pleasant fashion.

I totally agree with you that Nathaniel Rateliff is fantastic and I can't wait to see him again too, but the Tipi is perfect for him, I was really pleased he was playing in there and not in some mid afternoon slot outside somewhere where people would just talk through his set. Other Lives on the other hand need a bigger space than the Tipi, it's going to be crowded in there.
And I'm really not getting how on earth Spectrals are above either Nathaniel or Other Lives??

In all honesty i never finally judge any band until i've seen them live but the stuff i've heard from them so far has not blown me away. I might whack some on my walkman tomorrow and have a stroll along the promenade and see if i feel any differently about them.

regardless of what you think of them, ben has a point.
this is definitely a band on a steep (upward) parabolic curve, and while putting them in the tipi isn't quite the equivalent of the vaccines playing my local it's moving in that direction (just to be clear, i don't like the vaccines btw)
if they were a clash with okkvervil river or midlake it would be less of a problem, but although they partially clash with gruff, they are really up against the unthanks. i know the unthanks are talented but they are a bit specialised - anyone with a half decent rock sense rather than folk sense is going to gravitate to other lives (i will, even without perfect passions' shameless promotion
)
all in all, it's easy to see two to three thousand (+) folk trying to get in the tipi. eeek!

I'll probably see 10 or 15 mins of them (just to see if they're as good a live band as seadragon claims) if the Tipi is sort of on the way to the Big Top from the Woods Stage, but otherwise I'll be watching Gruff and Wooden Shjips

riverlodge, on 19 August 2011 - 08:11 PM, said:Well said! Its not just size of the tent thou. Their sound from what I heard needs space. It feels embarrasing that a band getting such good reviews is placed at the bottom of the pecking order, in what is mainly an accoustic tent (or a very large creche)!! There are a lot of solo acts on much bigger stages.regardless of what you think of them, ben has a point.

Unless someone else pulls out, which, if by last years form is very possible, I doubt that it can be changed. And then I think oh whats the point, as we have been repeatedly told our views only count for lets see something like 0.025% of the festival attendees. Who by all accounts, really only care if there is enough beer and pies to go round and a certain princess turns up at the end.

I never managed to download Tamer Animals when it was about a couple of months ago, so I've been in the dark til now.
But have now managed to find it streaming on Grooveshark, giving it a good listen. If the single 'For 12' is anything to go by, it could be a real gem.

It's fantastic, Risteardo, though I am still uncertain as to whether I like it more than their truly beautiful S/T debut LP...seek that out if you can. They'll have played quite a few European/UK festivals by EOTR, so should be warmed up nicely for a truly brilliant set!

I saw Wintersleep in the Tipi last year and it was my favourite set of the weekend. Full on rock band that sounded fantastic in a slightly smaller environment (it was vastly bigger and better than in 2009, and, who knows, might be a bit bigger still this year).
I think, though, that the best reason for Other Lives staying in the Tipi is so that their equipment is there ready for their 2am extra set.
ps....I think that The Unthanks will draw a huge crowd on account of being a "known" name - and Wooden Shjips may well get the "cool" vote.

S/T album is there too, so I've added it to my Grooveshark EOTR playlist.
I gotta say, Grooveshark is excellent for listening to some of the lesser know EOTR bands, a real find for me as I can't access Spotify in Ireland.
@Geofelgie. I adore the Unthanks, I'm just plain nuts about them. But have seen them several times over the past 12 months, so I may have to give them a miss this time round to catch Other Lives. It's gonna be a very cosy Tipi!

I'm having a listen on Spotify and finding myself utterly indifferent to their charms, so it will be Gruff followed by The Unthanks for me

I'm not a huge fan but they did do a Hearya sesssion while back (you can download the whole session from their site, one of the best music websites going, some brilliant sessions on there and all free to download)

No problem, you will possibly be there all day now, it's an amazing website. LOVE Elliott Brood, hoping to book them for next year for Brighton, fingers crossed. I HIGHLY recommened the Deep Dark Woods sessions on there, such a great band. Joe pug is another good one but in all honesty there's very few bad one's on there.
