This was talked about before given Alan Pardew's insane 2014, when he was first handed a warning and fined for calling Man City's then-boss Manuel Pellegrini a "f**king old c**t" during a bad-tempered game between Newcastle and Man City, and then not even six weeks later thought headbutting a Hull City player was a good idea, for which the book was thrown at him with a bigger fine and a stadium ban.

 

I'm aware few managers even at their worst go in such a hysterical direction, but the referee situation doesn't feel great. It feels like a lot of managers are just too content to whip up this conspiracy culture where the referees somehow hate everyone.

The only way managers will stop going after the referees is to put punishments in place that act as an incentive. Points penalties against the clubs and they would soon stop.

I don't think there's a big issue in recent years. Fergie was bad at it, klopp was equally as bad. 

 

Over all though it isn't a major issue. 

 

Referees don't help themselves though. A manager got sent off last week, for a slight rule break as the ball was going out and he stopped off the line.

They do not hang around over there, clearly, not least given we just had Bordeaux being exiled to the 4th tier. Also not a great look for John Textor, who is currently trying to buy Everton and sell his stake in Crystal Palace.

The allegations seem like a very different issue to the initial spark question of refereeing bias, much as it's still a question people wish to ask and at a time on whether we could have a crisis in refereeing down the line given we seem to be actively trying to put people off applying to become refs.

Good to see Scotland get a win at last on Friday. Performances have been on the up since the euros but the  winless streak was becoming a thing.

Wasn't a great game but an absolute pleasure to see Modric at Hampden again.

Think that’s the 3rd time I’ve been lucky enough to see him in the flesh. He destroyed us in the euros and was still running the show on Friday. Absolute class.

I only half-arsedly watched England v Ireland last night but 4 players scoring their first England goal in the same game must be some kind of record.

 

Also quite amused by the idea that Taylor Harwood-Bellis - one of the scorers and a highly regarded Southampton defender - is engaged to Roy Keane's daughter. Talk about a quick way to get criticism.

Eight points clear of Man City after they just beat Southampton and Man City's surprise walloping yesterday, and would be 11 ahead of Pep & the gang if they win their meeting at Anfield next Sunday.

 

Pretty unexpected ngl, not least as many Liverpool fans were whining that they didn't sign anyone major for the first team in the summer window, yet they seem to be going about the job rather nicely.

I'm not saying every fan did but there were a lot of vocal types making #FSGOut trend on Twitter, particularly after the Zubimendi rejection.

 

That rebuild may be forced on the Reds if any one of the 4/5 out-of-contract players bugger off in the summer, or indeed the possibility I think of Alisson being sold due to the advance signing of the keeper coming in from Valencia for next year. Still though. So far, not bad, and if they can build a double digit lead in the table next weekend, it'll be a good place to try to stick the landing from.

We’ve got a fantastic backup keeper already, I’m really fine with Bradley if TAA goes. Losing VVD or Salah would be tricky. But if they want to go then good luck to them.

I mean, 4 points for Ipswich from Spurs and Man United is pretty good going. Given Southampton's increasingly ridiculous defending and Leicester making the face-value odd decision to sack Steve Cooper after only 12 games, maybe Ipswich might be the best bet of the 3 newboys to stay up after all.

They've got a nice 3 game run, with some winnable games.

I think Ipswich were playing pretty good football early in the season - they just weren't getting any wins out of it. I can see it being like the last 1/4 of the season Burnley had last year - things click and they just have a style and enough quality and belief and start getting the points on the board.

 

I thought Southampton looked pretty dependent on Ramsdale to keep them up, and he's not good enough to do it with that defending in front of him. They already look done and dusted.

 

Who goes down with them is interesting though - I thought Palace's squad looked good coming out of the transfer window between retentions and signings - but apart from a couple of games they haven't played well at all. Wolves can't defend at all but they've got goals in them and I think that should keep them up eventually. Everton by contrast can't score but seem able to nick just enough wins to keep to about 1point per game which would usually keep a team up. I haven't really seen enough of Leicester this season to make any analysis, but they still seem pretty dependent on Vardy up front? Struggle to think anyone above the current bottom 6 will be dragged into it either.

Le sigh. A few good wins in a row for Newcastle followed up by a home faceplant against a West Ham side who spent most of the international break being the focus of "manager set to be sacked" rumours. Should really have known better.

Ipswich I think will be annoyed not to have won sooner - they let a lot of points go from winning positions early on. But they do seem to be getting it together.

Yeah definitely. There's quite a few games they could've pinched - the Liverpool one I remember thinking they possibly deserved more - but they've got enough about them that I'm hoping they just don't have a season-ruining run of bad form.

 

Palace are the one I find most curious - I think they've been really missing Wharton and Eze's looked a bit isolated creatively at times - but they've got enough else that I can't help but think they'll surely sort themselves out at some point. The rest of the bottom 6 I all thought would be around there from before but I just think they've got too much quality to be mired there all season. Having said/thought this about other teams that have gone down in the past...
