Pub In Reading

Guest Matticus

Recommended Posts

Haven't posted here in a couple of years, but I'd thought id pass on some info.

I run a pub in Reading, called The Greyfriar, situated about 30 seconds from the station ( on the corner, used to be called The Malthouse). We are a craft beer and real ale bar, and also provide food.

So if you have some downtime over the weekend and fancy a quality pint of beer or some grub, pop down. We will hopefully be showing highlights over the weekend, as well as classic Reading Festival performances on the TV screen, and we hopefully will be selling crates etc for you to take back to the campsite.

We also recently had Public Enemy stop by for a few drinks after their Reading Gig.

Apologies if this is against forum rules etc, just thought it may be of interest to some :)

Have fun at the festival, im gutted I can't come, first time since 2002 i've missed :(

It used to be the Gay Bar, Scruffy Murphys is now called The Gateway.

We have a brilliant selection of cask ales, local and from afar, with 6 guest pumps, so its constantly changing.

All our keg beers are craft beers and ciders ( you won't find fosters of carling here!) and our bottle range is good also.

We are situated at the bottom of the station hill ( which hopefully will be open in time for the festival). Its along the traditional walking route from the station to the festival site.

Fosters is a curse word around here :suicide:

We shall be open early every morning to feed the masses, but typically will be serving booze from 12 -12

The website unfortunately is not a true representation of the food on offer. It was set up by a previous manager and we cannot get access to it! I'd recommend looking at our facebook for more relevant info.

On that note, anyone good at website hacking skills?! :P

Myself along with 24 others got our phones nicked at a Flogging Molly gig in Reading a couple of months ago and tracked the scumbag to the Gateway pub, great night! Edited by jonnyisRFC

Haha, sharing platter for one please. Love the looks of the beers you have there. Dark star is a lovely beer.

With our cask ales they constantly change, one cask and its gone. You'll pop in one day and the beers would all be different from the last time you were in.

Having said that Dark Star American Pale Ale is a personal fav of mine so I might try and have some on for that weekend, if only so I can have a few to take the pain away of working all weekend instead of seeing Queens Of The Stone Age :(

I've had various parts crossed that stuff is cleared ASAP 'cause it's a bitch to get to Dawsons from town now. You could think about a sandwich board up by the car park 'cause you're still accessible that way.

Unfortunately it's completely the opposite direction from the station. And a Weatherspoons. Cheap though.

decent for on the thursday during the day if you want to escape other pubs which will be rammed before the party starts a bit later on

I've found out the station hill will still be closed come festival time. They will be sending people out the station and down garrard street, then down tot he bottom of station hill, where we are located, so you can't miss us!

Was in last night, good friendly boozer, a couple of suggestions if I may:

The music was good (I think I heard Yuck at some point) but every pub needs a jukebox.

Instead of the upcoming beers that blackboard by the bar should be used for descriptions of/info on the beers you've currently got on. Trying different beers is fun but it's good to have some info (strength, brewery, type of ale, flavour, etc.) when choosing what to try.

I agree with what your saying, It was pretty much made ( the blackboard) on that day, a kind of my idea but done by someone else. I'm going to get it so it is whats on now rather then on next, as I agree you'd want details on what is there now rather then what is on a few days later!

Thanks for popping in, next time come and say hello, I was working that evening :)

    • Another Kraftwerk one for me today, as just back from seeing them.
    • Completed my 2026 survey. Put down Super Furry Animals as my most wanted for next year but suspect the moment has gone for that. Popped a big shopping list in the box for who else you would like to see. 🙂
