The "New" Barrier

What's this all about? I've missed a couple of years and keep hearing about this. I assume this is like a crowd surge barrier, rather than a closed off area?

Always assumed its part of the license. That many people in one place - thou shalt have a surge barrier.

Works fine - only seems to frustrate those trying to push their way to the front when they come to it.

2009 first year? or was it even earlier?

I always thought it was 2008 when I first noticed it go up on the Wednesday and remember telling people at the eFests meet that year that I hoped that it wasn't an attempt to build a 'Golden Circle' in front of the Pyramid...

Nah, its mainly manned by security to give them a quick path through the crowd at that point to get to any issues going on. As far as moving in and out in the space in front of it I've never seen any additional crowd control going on.
