If I'm honest, there's a tiny bit of my brain which refuses to give in and still thinks Pearl Jam's announcement has just been delayed due to their MK shows... :ninja:

Don't think Pearl Jam would headline, simply because Smashing Pumpkins/QOTSA didn't

Pearl Jam would be incredible, a fabulous act.

Pumpkins? QOTSA? Not in the same league as PJ in any recognisable measure of whether a band is qualified to headline!

It's a sad state of affairs when comments like this are being made :bye::suicide:

Pearl Jam would go down like a sack of shit at Glastonbury. any time this argument is brought up people use Reading or Isle Of Wight as an example of 'but it went down great there' - but people knew what act they were buying tickets for at those festivals. at Glastonbury, when people buy tickets with no knowledge of the acts, Pearl Jam being the surprise Saturday Night headliner would bomb so hard

Why would it bomb? Why does it have more potential than Metallica to bomb?

(And they were great at both IoW and Reading). :ninja:

Because they're not very good... Eddie Vedder's voice goes through me like nails on a blackboard. It's just so annoying. Pearl Jam on the Other though would go down well I imagine though as an alternative, a bit like Smashing Pumpkins/QOTSA, but headlining would just be a bit massive, disappointing no

Nah, always been astonishing live when I've seen them.

I'd put their back catalogue up against most bands too, certainly the likes of KoL, Arcade Fire, bloody Arctic Monkeys, all of whom have, or are set to, headline.

I guess it comes down to that tricky old business of trying to argue our tastes being better than someone else's eh*?

* Mine's the best.

except that people know KOL and Arctic Monkeys back catalogues, and Arcade Fire are current (and more people will know their back catalogue because of this). Pearl Jam haven't had a recognisable song (outside of die hard fans) in over twenty years

nobody gives a shit about Pearl Jam outside of their die hard fans, who will argue to the death that they're one of the greatest bands ever. there seems to be no middle ground with Pearl Jam. you're either a massive fan, or you know fuck all about them after Ten / Vs.

I think they have had some recognisable songs in the past 20 years, but maybe you're right, people just don't care. Bring on Metallica (although I'd argue they haven't done anything very good in years either)!

Arcade Fire are one of the biggest and most relevant bands at the moment, never mind their back catalogue being ridiculously better than Pearl Jam's.

Kings of Leon at the time of headlining were well loved, respected and massively popular. I don't think they'll be doing it any time soon however.

Arctic Monkeys are continually up there in terms of British music, regardless of whether you like them or not, their popularity really isn't waivering at all.

Pearl Jam will not and should not headline Glasto, unless they somehow roll back 20 years and bring out a music-changing and really successful (critically and sales wise) album. If they do it now based on their current status it will open the doors for the likes of Aerosmith, Journey, Axl Roses' Guns n' Roses & Linkin Park to headline. I don't think anybody will really ever want this. I'm not slating them (although I don't like them), but they're not a band to headline Glasto at the moment...

They are a lot more worthy of the headline slot then say the rolling stones last year (who yes maybe a bit more `mainstream` but also haven't toured or made new music for years plainly are not that `into` it anymore and lets face it only got back together for the money-proof of that was ripping off there fans with silly ticket prices in the process)

Now you're just being silly :)

When the Stones headlined, it may have been 8 years since their last studio album but it will be 6 years since Metallica's.

Not into it? They "Lavd iiiit!"

They could have headlined the 3 nights and still played songs that most people knew. It was all kinds of awesome. I don't think they've had to previously make the field bigger for anyone else and it still wasn't big enough.

TURN THE LIGHTS ON PATRIIICK!

I won't have it, I think they'd be fabulous.

Arctic Monkeys were a bit of fresh air in a stale British music scene who rapidly went downhill; Arcade Fire, while a fabulous band and worthy headliners, much like PJ, haven't hit the heights of first two albums in my opinion, and when compared to Glasto's own apparent criteria (see Beyonce, Mumford and Sons, Killers, etc) don't have any stronger claim as a result; and as for Kings of Leon, good grief, surely they weren't respected for that Sex On Fire-era twaddle?! Three or four years before, different story...

But there you go. I'll shush now, as it won't happen and was a flippant comment in the first place! Apologies.

As long as these c**ts play Orion, Fade to Black and Whiplash I'll go home happy.

don't think they've played Whiplash in a while have they? :( (well, apart from when they played Kill 'Em All in it's entirety / if it's been 'requested' in their current shows)

    • Any festival is going to face most of the same limitations just by the nature of the event. It's not realistic to accommodate custom staging that extends out deep into the field. Trying to do so and trying to rebuild those kind of structures at the front of the field every day would severely impact on other performers, potentially even including other headliners. It'd also drive everyone involved insane. The most you can get away with is a basic extension that doesn't hide anything fancy. Remember that a lot of the time on these big choreographed shows, the stage extension itself will contain all manner of things to help the show beyond just being a simple platform. Also remember that these structures are designed to be assembled and operate on perfectly flat stadium or arena floors.   In terms of the stage itself - yes, the Pyramid is undersized (I believe 16 metres wide at rigging level). The de facto industry standard has become 20 metres and so it likely does need increasing and apparently there are plans to do so. But that only helps with artists that can largely confine themselves to the stage.   The Other Stage is already 20 metres - to be exact the Other Stage structure is the same model that Serious Stages provide to Reading, Leeds, Download etc for use as their Main Stage and there's nothing larger (at least off the shelf) in their catalogue. So no reason to change that.
    • Can someone remind me, on Harry Styles specifically - have we had any concrete info on him?   I don't personally remember saying much/anything on him, though I have just been away for a month, so could be forgetting something.
