Portishead - Wow.

I've never actually seen them before, are they always that incredible, or was that just a once in a lifetime type gig I wonder?

I've grabbed almost everything that was shown on the beeb off the torrent networks, hoping to get hold of some of the red button stuff over the next few days.

The beeb's Portishead coverage is superb, no annoying titles, just the performance. Shame about the whopper who decided to stand right in the centre of the soundstage with some sort of mega flag and poles construction, but mostly it is great footage. There are 480p, 576p and 720p versions out there to download.

It's the fourth time I've seen them. I have to say, they're always great live. Barrow is an absolute perfectionist and doesn't allow any slacking at all. They're always brilliantly drilled and so tight as a live band. And of course, Beth's voice is always haunting. So yeah, they always put on a superb show musically.

But Friday was genuinely something else. Again, though I'm told it's total crap by so many non-Glastonbury fans and suchlike, there is something about that particular patch of English land that brings something extra out of a band. Whether it was just that they had something to prove or the reaction of the audience (when you listen back you can hear so many whoops and cheers during sections of songs), they just seemed to step up to a another level entirely, a bit like Blur in 2009 when it seemed that the crowd and the atmosphere just drove them along. It was one of those gigs that three songs in, people were looking at each other and almost realising there and then that this was going to be truly special. And the emotion in the crowd was incredible. A girl next to me properly broke down during 'Wandering Star' - absolute floods of tears. People hugging each other during 'Roads'. Just an astonishing 70 minutes of music that completely re-enforced my faith in life and Glastonbury (especially after 2011 was a generally middling experience and I wondered if it had lost its magic)

Had to deal with a few people chatting loudly around me, and told them to shut up during Wandering Star, but the minute they started Glory Box, they had totally won over everyone and from then on it was absolute perfection. I wish I'd moved forward a bit more. Several times I had to move away from chatterers - one guy said that they were "just playing the same set they played in 1998"! With an infuriating sneer he dismissed it as "comedown music from the nineties". I wanted to scream at him - leave then! Go and watch something terrible and RELEVANT at Silver Hayes!

Eventually I found a group of Bristol smokers, who seemed like the ideal bunch with whom to watch Portishead. And they were! They kept giving me beer!

I hear what everybody's saying about how it just felt special throughout, and I couldn't agree more. My highpoints were the extended Mysterons (complete with Mysteron light rings!), an irresistably seductive Glory Box and the closing We Carry On, which I've never really liked on the album, but live it was monstrous.

They were variously haunting, sad, sexy, cinematic and devastating - but never anything less than utterly captivating.

My question for those who definitely know more of them than me - what was that song they played with the analogue synth sequence that's not on any of their albums? According to setlist.fm, it's called Chase The Tear. If it's a new song, fantastic - they've obviously been listening to a lot of Ghost Box - but if it's an old or an unreleased song, is there anywhere I can find a recording?

Has anyone noticed that "The Rip" is missing from the iplayer footage? I'm sure I remember it being played between Mysterons and Sour Times..... Theres not any other tracks missing is there?

Agree with everyone else, they were absolutely superb and easily the best thing I saw all weekend. And to think until that afternoon I wasn't sure whether to watch them or Crystal Castles...thank god I made the right choice
