Good rum offers

Morning, i know there is a booze bargain thread, i saw it a few weeks ago, but cant locate it now :-(

Anyone know any decent supermarket offers on rum and vodka at the minute?

I got some sensational rum in aldi a few weeks back, but their stocks seem to change every week...worth a look though.

Not sure about vodka, I just got cheap stuff from tesco. I never think expensive vodka is much different from the cheap stuff.

Sainsbury have 1L bottles of Russian Standard (the 40% stuff) for £15, didn't notice any offers on rum?

Aldi cheap Vodka and Rum are generally a cut above the other supermarkets, you will notice that many of them have won awards in competition, their 40% vodka is very good (but £10 for 500ml so not THAT cheap), their gin is excellent for 750ml at under a tenner.

Please nobody suggest "Glen's Vodka" that stuff gives me a headache BEFORE it gets me piissed!

The only difference between expensive vodka and cheap stuff is the hangover the next morning. I once drunk half a litre of Belvedere and felt fine the next morning, whereas supermarket stuff sends me sideways. Unfortunately it's not something I can do often... (not that I recommend regularly drinking half a bottle of vodka, of course).

is that hangover thing actually true though? surely only the alcohol content is what causes a hangover. Why would 40% smirnoff give you less of a hangover than a 40% tesco brand?

rum I think is more flavoursome and you can actually taste the difference between a cheap one and an expensive one.

The more expensive ones (Belvedere, Grey Goose, etc) seem a lot less 'harsh' to me. I think it's something to do with the filtering, or the fact cheaper ones use more chemicals? I've always felt it's the booze content which dehydrates you but the chemicals etc which give you the bad stomach. Same with wine - most bottles you find in pubs are just full of sugar/sulphites - bottles from independant wine shops are much better, and not too expensive.

...Or maybe I'm just sold by the pretty packaging and it's all in my head!

is this in stores or just online? was under the impression that it was just online but you had to spend like £40+ for free postage which was more hassle than it was worth. if in store i will definitely be getting some. only £2 more in Asda so if only online will just go there

It is widely thought that Congeners are a contributory factor to hangovers, vodka, generally, contains smaller quantities of these by volume, whisky red wine contain the most (AFAIK). I'm not sure if the more expensive brands of vodka generally contain less due to better filtering or brewing/distillation techniques, I'd assume so to a degree, but think there's also an element of placebo/nocebo effect coming into play too.

Definitely in store. I was in our local store (Darlington) and the 750ml bottles actually cost more than the 1L ones???

i got a bottle of smirnoff vodka and morgan spiced 2 for 24 pound in tesco last week. Loads of the spirits were 2 for 24, not sure when that offer runs til though

I wonder if you people that had a bad experience of Glens were victims of the massive counterfeit operation that targeted Glens? Fake voddy was flooded onto the market apparently. More research to follow. If I can be arsed.

Luckily for me my friend is coming from Barcelona and bringing some bottles of Havana Especial with him (10 euros over there!)

But I did notice Captain Morgans was £13 for a litre in Asda this weekend if that is any use to you.

This may have been the case, we used to drink it all the time when we where students (back then it was called Grants vodka) and I never had any bad effects form it (apart from the week I moved to Newcastle, downed an entire bottle in a couple of hours, went to a club, left without my friends and then realised I new neither where I was or where I lived).
