If anyone can give me an example of when a band that could comfortably fill arenas prior to their hiatus, headlined the NME stage on the back of further reunion hype as well, then I shall except that NIN may well be in the tent...

When did they fill any arenas in the UK? Not to mention they headlined Download that year, so it was bizarre that they were even there at all.

Oh & Gazza, European festivals are totally different to the UK market, I'm not sure how many times people have to tell you that before it goes in.

I'm not sure Janes Addiction can count as it was a co-headline tour with NIN who I'm also not sure would count as before that they would always play Brixton.

The only examples that come to mind are LCD Soundsystem who headlined Wirless the same year and Lostprophets & Babyshambles who played Wembley Arena the year or two before headlining the NME.

Jane's Addiction & FNM have never been close to being as big as NIN, certainly not in the UK. The others didn't have the "reunion" hype either & I'd still argue they're not as big as NIN, so I'd discount those.

NIN are a difficult band to place, because as you say they often chose to play Brixton similar to how QOTSA usually do. I guess we shall see, time will tell.

Except Deftones & BMTH appear to be playing pretty high up, as are System... I respect what you're saying, but with a new booker & the festival taking a slightly different attitude towards headliners (at least they did when they booked the Cure last year) combined with what SOAD said & what I've heard from someone I believe to be reliable I personally believe NIN will be the last headliner.

I may be proved wrong & I'm happy to accept that if & when I am.

At leeds it's about 10,000 I think, and slightly bigger at reading

22,000 is always the number that comes up in my head when this question is asked, but I never have any idea if its actually correct (or indeed if its even close.)

They have a big cult following that will sell tickets to their dedicated fans. Many more of these will attend Download (who I can't remember ever booking them) and Sonisphere (a much smaller festival, yes they had Metallica but their subs are bands that have comfortably played 3rd/NME position no higher at R&L).

Say what you want about the different between Europe and UK now and how I should realize whatever by now, but I think you should take a look at a booking of a band at their prime festival, compared to at a fest where thousands won't even care that they are there except for the dedicated one's. From what I've heard, their 2007 crowd under TSP says it all.

The reason why there is a R&L and a Download is due to different crowds. The reason why bands like Deftones and BMTH don't play as high at R&L is because they are crossover bands for the base of people with an interest in something more metal too.
