Rasputin

Connection: The chorus begins "Ra, Ra, Rasputin."

I saw this lot at a festival a couple of years ago when they were pulled in at short notice after one of the main acts had to pull out because of a bereavement. Everyone expected them to be very cheesy and naff but they put on a surprisingly good show and had the audience on their feet and dancing throughout their set.

Erica

streaker11.jpg

After Erica Roe's streat at Twickenham I was involved in 'buying her up' for the Sunday People and taking her down to meet the Welsh Rugby Squad for another photoshoot. We then had had a huge blizzard and Erica and the lads were all stranded at the hotel in Porthcawl, which had been cut off by the snow. The problem was that apart from huge boobs she was so boring that the rugby lads were pleading with me to get her away from them. In the end she was helicoptered out.

And a little music too.

Danny

The link is an odd one. Danny Bryant is, in my view one of the finest young British Blues guitarists, who I've championed over the last few years and introduced to various festivals. It's a real family business. Danny is managed by his mum Heather, his dad plays bass and his wife is their roadie/guitar technician. They're in my mind because I'll be seeing them this Saturday.

I also saw Heather Small at the Tsunami Relief Concert at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in 2004, which I was involved in running. Very impressive.

Anyway, back to Danny Bryant. He's a protege of Walter Trout and this is Danny's version of a Walter Trout arrangement of the Bob Dylan song Girl from the North Country. Danny's a really nice bloke, only 32 and a magnificent guitarist. He now plays about 300 gigs a year, mainly in Germany and Holland where there's a big blues following.

Lots of young blues guitarists can to the lightning fingers stuff. But to me the impressive ones are those who can also do quiet and sensitive. It's the space between the notes that matters as much. Enjoy.....

Danny Bryant has been my Xmas concert treat for the last 2 years in a little tiny venue in Essex, great stuff, shame I wasn't able to make it this year. 1st year I had a smoke outside and 2 old fellas were chatting about old Marshall amps in great detail. When the band came on one of them turned out to be his old fella on Bass. Love the atmosphere the band create and as said, he's a really good Blues player, very impressive.

Red

One person I really want to see live, don't have many of them these days. An unreleased version of Red, Red, Red. Not nearly as polished as the album version.

Nice link, funny, i never had a clue who played that tune, enjoyed my little voyage if discovery, love his Hendrix cover and nod to Jimi at the start, nice touch. Dick Dale sound reminds me so much of this tune, so...

Twang

Went to see DE out of curiosity, really only knowing Peter Gunn, stayed for a few tracks, started to walk away and this started, impossible to leave after that, magic moment.

Saw

The Saw Doctors are one of my favourite festival bands, with a wonderful twangy guitar sound. These are a couple of my favourites. A band that never disappoints.

And Claire Island.
