I wouldn't be against Stone Roses, it would be a major coup to get them before IOW and Reading and I know Sonisphere said they will be changing things, but it wouldn't make any sense to go straight in there with one of the biggest Indie icons of all time.

oh, it defo would make sense. It would mean they're distinct from Download, and that they'd sell tickets - both things they've failed at so far.

If Soni tries to stay in the same ballpark as download it's a dead duck sooner or later.

A one off gig at Knebworth might be more likely, perhaps the same weekend as Download for added bite.

I've been saying for ages now that Soni will eventually be more like Reading of the 90's. But I don't think the transition will happen straight away. I think it will be a slow burner, introducing more alternative headliners and lightening up the undercard over time.

Whilst The Stone Roses might work, I can't see where they would take the undercard without going for acts like Noel Gallagher or Beady Eye.

I do see the point of going in hard though, one it would remove the chance of Phoenix rising and 2 it would tap in to the dwindling Reading market.

I wouldn't have said competing with Reading, V or T would do them many more favours. ;)

It would be easier for them, purely on the basis that there's a massively bigger market the more an event moves towards the mainstream.

And because Reading has changed its style by a fair amount to lessen the cross-over it has with Download, I'd say that there's a place for a fest to do pretty much what Reading used to. Which is of course something close-ish to what Soni has been doing - but it's been too far in the Download direction and not enough in the Reading direction IMO.

Then again, Soni wouldn't have it too easy if it did do that, because Reading & V would want many of the same acts - but at least there's many more acts within that pool of acts than there is with the heavier stuff.

What about the classic rock market as well though? Download has gone for the heavier spectrum this year, Reading doesn't touch that market very often, Hard Rock Calling is hit and miss and High Voltage seems to be a non starter.

there's quite a few ways to expand what they do, but what they don't want to be doing is running the same bands as Download ran the year before - which is what they mostly did, and even when they didn't it was still acts you'd expect for Download.

They need to make it distinct from Download (so not too much of the classic rock, if they had any at all), and move it more towards where the punters are - which isn't the metal side of things even when we're in a metal/rock upsurge as we are currently.

They'll have waaay more options if they go down that route, they can take a selection of bands not just from the previous years download but 90s Readings line ups aswell! : ).Especially if they are trying to appeal not just to the kiddies.

Finish off the Stone Roses day by chucking in Garbage in there somewhere, Primal Scream was a nice suggestion, as are the Cribs, maybe Gol Gol Bordello? Frank Turner and a couple of newer bands like The Joy Formidable and Yuck, a bit heavier on the other 2 days and I'd be right in there on ticket day.

I just can't see it happening, I think they will go for a similar lineup to previous years, with added lighter bands down the bill. There's a big market there and it proved in 2010 and 2011. Where Sonisphere said they could have easily stretched the capacity to 80k, but didn't want to, that says the demand is there. 2012 was just a blip year.

There's only 1 other real alternative festival on the market and that's Download. Reading, V, T, Oxegen, Glastonbury and many others do the Indie/Lighter stuff.

There's only 1 other real alternative festival on the market and that's Download.

but there's also only one set of bands - which makes two festivals unsustainable, especially when the fashion turns again (like it always does).

Soni have already recognised this to some extent, by trying to be a bit different with some of their bookings. But the problem is that overall it's too dominated by the same bands as Download, and so only really appeals to the same people who might go to Download (which isn't a big enough group of people when split two ways).

The lighter stuff might get some interest, but lots of them will be turned off by that heavier stuff. It's too niche, and there's too much of it.

Getting the Roses would be a big statement that it's not the same as Download, which is why I could see it happening (along with Melvin's comments which has suggested that the Roses are doing an exclusive of some sort next year).

He said his feeling are that they're probably not on his list to choose from, that could be for a number of reasons.

he also said he didn't think Glastonbury would have them. A fairly obvious assumption to make from all of his words is that he knows that they're signed up (or were about to sign up) to some sort of exclusive deal elsewhere which would stop them doing both Glastonbury and R/L. That might not be behind what he said, but it's a reasonable assumption from his words.

If they have signed an exclusive deal then that doesn't necessarily mean Soni, but Soni would have to be a realistic possibility, tho perhaps not as strong a possibility as some other places.

    • Another Kraftwerk one for me today, as just back from seeing them.
    • Completed my 2026 survey. Put down Super Furry Animals as my most wanted for next year but suspect the moment has gone for that. Popped a big shopping list in the box for who else you would like to see. 🙂
    • Blink-182 / Avril Lavigne / Good Charlotte / Neck Deep    Lamb of God / Malevolence      System Of A Down / Five Finger Death Punch / Skindred / Godsmack   Motionless In White / Poppy      Deftones / Gojira / Knocked Loose / President    Sabaton / Amon Amarth
