Thats a bit silly. Writing off Jones after 3/4 of a season. Hes just turned 20.

In fact, Jones and Smalling are the ones most likely to make it, and for good reason. But they still might not.

And even younger players will be playing next season – Keane, Fryers, Tunnicliffe. Oh sure, laugh now at them and Cleverley but I remember people laughing when a certain quiet 5 ft 7 red head lad made his debut in 1994 after Hughes left. And I remember the laughter when he was moved to centre midfield when Keano did his cruciate.

18 years and ten leagues later..............

what about the huge numbers which played for a while, sometimes for more than within just one season?

The simple fact is that the vast majority of them don't make it. It's been just that once that a number came thru and stayed thru, and it's starting to look like Utd will be lost without the couple that still remain because nothing else has got anywhere close to that good.

(it's also somewhat amusing that the group who did come thru started at the club at the time that Utd were getting fined almost weekly for nicking players off the books of other clubs - which suggests to me that the success of those players was probably the result of having a huge number of kids on the books, rather than particularly good judgement over which kids to take on).

But its totally differnt now in the premier league. They have to be at a very top level already when they get in the united side, of course scholes would still of been a success but he wouldnt of been in the first team so quick.

Dont you think they got in the side due to lack of competition in there positions? The reason why fabio doesnt get much of a sniff, pleased for de gea but he got lucky with lindegard getting injured.

how ever you dress it up fergies record in the last 10 years in bringing youth through the ranks is dire. of this seasons squad who have started more than 10 games, only 2 have come throught he ranks in the last 10 years(evans and wellbeck)

I've said it many times on here and I'll always believe it - going out and buying a team of world class players is no way to run a club. It might bring success short term, but it'll fail long term. Win the battle, lose the war sort of thing.

Oh, I agree. An excellent team needs to develop into being that excellent team.

But even so I think fergie's failing more now than he's done for 15+ years. He's too off-target too often recently.

Mind you, it's not only Utd that can fuck up with kids, even tho they've had quite a number of their own million pound plus ones that have never kicked a ball.

I read recently that a couple of kids that Chelsea paid a total of £5M for at 14 had been released on frees, with one going to a League Two club and the other to a non-league club (I forget the names of the players and the clubs, but read that in the last couple of months).

So would you agree that with fergies record of bringing through you in the last 15 years, the chances of the the next crop of youngsters making it is very very slim.

I've just made a few posts about Sky in the F1 thread, which has got me thinking about the bigger picture.....

I think it's very likely that the next Sky contract for the Prem will be significantly down on the money it pays, because even if it can keep its domestic customers its losing its pubs at a huge rate - and they pay £1k a month for Sky.

If that happens it's going to have a huge impact on Prem finances, enough to tip more than one club over the edge I reckon.

I was under the impression the tv contract would be higher with al jazeera and espn getting involved.

Do many people sign up to all of the pay-to-view options? I'd be surprised if ESPN is doing any better than Setanta did.

And while there might be more markets around the world that it can be sold into, they surely don't bring in much in comparison to the home market, do they? The incomes are generally lower in those places, and the take-up is likely to be lower too.
