Re: Cigarettes. You may have some difficulty shifting these due to the number of counterfeit cigarettes doing the rounds currently. Plus you're more likely to get in trouble with the cops over tabacco sales than booze sales I would have thought. Again, I'd consider selling these in the car parks as people arrive, they may have forgotten their fags, will probably have a fair bit of cash on them and be more willing to part with the money.

This all reminds me of when I bought a pack of 20 Silk Cut from Tescos and got home to discover someone had neatly taken the fags out of it and replaced it with some rolled up newspaper.

I'm considering bringing some ciggies to sell... They will cut off my wristband if I'm caught? Will they stop me coming in if I have a couple of cartons in my bag? Will the 'I'm a heavy smoker, about 60 a day' excuse cut it?

Really need some extra cash for the weekend, but I'm sketching a bit now

You might not even make it onto site. Several times on the way to Glasto I've been stopped by Customs & Excise, who've gone thru my vehicle looking for alcohol and fags which hasn't had the duty paid on it.

I'm not gonna have a car full or anything, prob 20 packs of 20. You are allowed duty free cigs for personal use, aren't you?

yep, you're allowed duty free ciggies for personal use - but as far as I'm aware everything is at the discretion of Customs & Excise, who need to be convinced that

1. you're not planning to sell what you have, and

2. the duty free ciggies that you have have been bought by you personally on a trip abroad and not bought from a dodgy geezer in a pub who's selling illegal duty-free imports.

I'm not sure how easy it is for them to identify 'illegal' fags, but given that the vast majority of 'illegal duty free' imports are supposedly fake fags and not the brand they're pretending to be, it might be quite easy for them to spot that what you have are illegal imports (if that's what they actually are, of course).

we were pulled over one year by customs and excise doing random checks we had lager from abroad and baccy but nowt was said ,though they did seem to enjoy watching us having to reload the old bus back up with all our stuff.

on the cold beer front bar staff at the u2 gig in cardiff in 2005 were walking about with backpacks of cold lager and plastic cups ,thought it was a good idea for large gigs ,stop the ridiculous long queues at the bars thought it might have caught on but havent seen it since, dont recall seeing them at the 360 gig in cardiff tho.

If you are going to do it though, take a leaf out of the drug dealers in The Wire ie; don't hold the beer & sell at the same time. Have someone in charge of guarding/distributing the beer, and then simply go out and get orders, then get the beer from the stash return them to your customer and take the money... and have a couple of spotters to keep an eye out for the rozzers.

A lot of people confuse duty free with duty paid, where tax has been paid somewhere in the EU.

You're allowed to posses any number of fags as long as duty has been paid in the EU and they are for personal use.

http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co.uk/dutyfree.html

that's not quite accurate, as c&e say that if you have more than a certain number of fags (I forget the number), its beyond what can be considered "for personal use".

So it's not true to say "You're allowed to posses any number of fags as long as duty has been paid in the EU".

Depends whose paying really - I saw the footballer Joey Barton last year in the queens head and his mates where offering £50 for 6 pints someone had bought from the bar.

I however would pay £3.50 per can if it was chilled and of a good standard. If it was Carling or some other type of cooking lager I would pay them nothing and tell them to sling their hook.

I also paid £5 for four cans of strongbow the other year during Florence and The Machine as I thought it might help need to drown here wailing out ...

There were lots of lads wandering round very late Sunday night/Monday morning near the stone circle trying to sell off leftover/scavanged cans. Didn't get much business though 'cos we were giving 'em away for free ;)

It's about opportunity cost isn't it. On a boiling hot day in a crushed and sweaty crowd where you don't want to moveI'd happily give £2.50 for a cold can of average lager. Elsewhere and on a day that's not so hot I'd probably not give you £1 for a warm Stella. You need to get the marketing right and £2 to £2.50 a can should be achievable.
