My local Wetherspoons (Stratford, where the Olympics are) had some in stock recently, I grabbed what seemed to be the last bottle on Saturday. My thoughts were not bad, but certainly not a session cider and only 4.5%. Would go nicely with a shot of Southern Comfort & lime though.

Not many people know this, but the alcopop market in this country was started by a ginger: the predecessor of Hoopers Hooch: Hoopers Ginger Brew. I worked on a project to help revive its sales; as part of that we looked at a new drink just coming into the country: an alcoholic lemonade called Mad Dog. Out of that relationship came the hideous mutant offspring: Hoopers Hooch. I'm sorry. But I'm blaming it on the ginger :(

A guy I work with has been raving about that stuff for the past fortnight which he said he picked up from a specialist off license but he described it as being a fortified wine similar to Pukefast. Same grog or something totally different?

Yes, sorry, slip of the tongue. It was Two Dogs (from Australia, imported by Merrydown). Mad Dog 2020 is indeed a health hazard that was popular up in the North East, especially, afaicr.

for a second i thought this was going to be a thread about the proclaimers being added to the glasto line-up

also is quite funny to see some chat about mad dog. md2020 (as its usually called) is still the drink of choice up here in scotland for young neds who haven't yet moved onto buckfast.

Got some last night, it's really good but took me a while to drink and found one bottle enough, not a patch on festival strength pear, still the best and the one I'll be partaking in in June

I like the new Ginger Brothers. Although, I like that Crabbies malarkey too though. Power to the ginger.

Although like a lot of the novelty flavours, Im not sure I would want to drink loads and loads of them, theyre nice for a refreshing change one or two, not for a full skinfull.

My current brothers cider chart countdown....

8. Tutti Frutti - Uuugh.

7. Strawberry - Sort of ok, but sort of wrong at the same time.

6. Toffee Apple - Sickly sweet but quite nice. One is enough.

5. Apple Cider - Nice but see pear below

4. Non-Festival Pear - Nice but missing that extra festival punch

3. Ginger - Cracking Stuff

2. Lemon - Lovely Stuff, bring it back!! Where can I buy some??!

1. Original Festival Strength - Obviously.

For me the objective of a festival is not to get as drunk as possible as quickly as possible - I can do that at home. If I'm drinking 7% festival strength it will destroy me far too early in the day and I will feel drunk, tired and not want to move around much. More over that sort of thing tends to give me a banging hangover. I'd rather drink a lot, but slowly over the course of the day. When evening comes I will be merrily pissed but not shitfaced. I don't see the point of excessively strong drinks, beyond the short-lived novelty value.

I still have yet to try any brothers other than the toffee apple one (which i do like but yes i imagine you may struggle with the second as it could get sickly)

Looking forward to trying some of that festival strength pear B) whats it like compared to normal, say magners pear cider?

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
    • It’s rare that I watch question time, but I almost felt sorry for Kenyon, he seemed like a guy just brought off the street which effectively is what he was, made worse by the fact Burnham and the Tory guy were very strong debaters. I think Burnham was very aware not to go too hard on Kenyon and risk him getting sympathy, in fact he pretty much ignored him.
    • Shambles. Transport and comms garbage. Been looking forward to this since last June and have never been to a more disorganised festival in 30+ years.  Why we were told the whole festival was cancelled for the night if they had put back shows for a few hours?  Pissed off to say the very least and put a huge downer on the rest of the weekend.
