The Libertines

I was just thinking, after reading an article about how The Libertines will be playing some shows this year, that The Libertines reunion could've been alot more special.

There is definitely more to a gig than just the music; the atmosphere, the suspense, the hype, the imagery. If The Libertines were booked to headline Leeds/Reading 2010, I think it would've been all the more special. I remember not really giving a shit for The Libertines when they came on, because it didn't feel quite right. It was daylight, and they weren't headlining, but the reunion should've been a massive deal for rock 'n' roll.

Anyone else agree?

They would have pulled off a headline slot, no question.

But I read somewhere that they were booked as co-headliners instead because it would have been a massive risk putting a band who are well known to be unstable at the top of the bill, when there was every chance they could have had a fallout and cancelled the reunion, thus pulling out.

Yes. People don't realise how much material they actually have. They have easily about five records worth of material. Some of it may not be appealing to commercial ears but it's there.

The reason they didn't headline is because of the risks of them not turning up, or them falling out. I'm a massive fan but I can understand why. I'm going to see Peter tonight, but I won't be leaving untill the last minute, when I can be fairly certain he'll actually show. When they were together, they were never at the height to headline R&L so it's understandable a reunion wouldn't move them up. It was special enough for me anyway.

As has been said, a really good act can play at any time of the day and have the crowd eating out the palm of their hands. Sometimes it is better after dark but not always.

As for saying that the Libs have enough material for a headline appearance but how much of that material would only be known by Libs geeks? Fair enough alot of people might not know every Arcade Fire tracks but at least they're all album tracks and not hard to find.

They could have headlined, the didn't. I enjoyed it. What does it matter?

As much as I loved the Libs, If the bands were reversed I would have been too emotionally drained after the arcade fire to enjoy them as much. And really any band would have been an anti climax after such an amazing set by Arcade Fire.

It was a perfect end to the day as it was.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
