All these comments about if they are not headliners then Id rather they didn't play at all. Hahaha. What a bunch of weirdos. What does it matter. If you like a band you go and see them and have a right good time (or not) the amount of pretentious shit on this post is nearly funny. Not quite but nearly. Some people need to get x life and relax a little. By far the worst and most cringe worthy post ever on a forum.

I know the post doesn't seem to make sense, but as a huge R.E.M. fan, it does to me.

The guys are very humble, I know for a fact they hung around for a long time after one of their TITP performances to enjoy the festival (something you of all people must admire, Neil ;-) )

However, they must also be aware that they are one of the world's biggest bands, and wouldn't enjoy playing second fiddle to a band with about a quarter of their age. It's more of a seniority ("we've earned this") thing, than an ego ("we're better than you") thing.

That said, could easily see them playing a smaller stage, as they have done on numerous occasions in recent years, especially at a festival they enjoy so much.

cornelio shut up you f**kin tool! your clearly in the minority of glasto dwellers who are complete n utter cocks. judy has some decent views on this topic and you butt in with some stupid insults towards someone you don't know... so annoying you've made me contradict myself...and i hate it when i contradict myself.

if i knowingly pass your tent at glasto and have a fart ready i will aim it as close to your head as i can possibly get it!

This will go down as one of the strangest threads I have seen on this forum.

So, I understand the whole"I like this band/I don't like this band" conversation, that's fine, that's part of why I love music, it can evoke so many different emotions between people, no problem.

But to disagree and get cross over the place on the bill relative to another band is pointless, really. If you like them be happy you'll get the chance to see them, if not, move on, nothing to see here.

What a very odd thread...

Result, I'm in a caravan this year but will message you when there and you can come up. I'll leave a window open for you or something.

All I'm saying is this thread is pathetic with everybody going on about egos, headlining, people not ever going again if they don't headline, they deserve to headline as they have been at it longer, they would and should never play before anybody else including some pretty big names also!! It's like has been said a pretty strange and pointless thread.

Think some people may just be a little bit emotional when it has come to REM. And as for Judy having some decent views then that being the case I would take back "my" thoughtless comment made to her.

As for me being a "glasto dweller" that is in the complete and utter cock brigade I don't agree at all. I've been going to the festival for around 15 years, seen some great moments and some great bands, loved most of my time there but have noticed more and more the utter shit that people come out with over "headliners" and which stage "headliners" play etc.

If I was an REM fan I would probably rather see them in another part of the festival and to be honest if they were asked to do say the park I think hey would say fine, be all over it and totally smash it as well!! Mind you I don't know there thoughts, desires and egotistical needs as much as most other people do that have posted on this but they do seem quite down to earth, realistic and most of all probably love playing to a crowd no matter where or how many!!!!! Get a grip is what I will say.

Let me know where about your camping and I'll try and make sure I get the caravan on the same sort of side for you.

I'm definitely amused. There are more backs up on this thread than on Meerkat Farm. Apparently mine is, which couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe I should have put an ickle smiley or a LOL at the end of my postings so you knew I wasn't being serious.

Other than about Codplay, that is. It would be hilarious to see REM 2nd on the bill to Codplay, and they'd blow them off the stage anyway.

more hilarious to me would be some of the posters in this thread eating their words.

And some are very definitely going to be doing that. Their love of REM is stronger in their heads than any sense they might have.

eFestivals think Codplay would put on a better festival show than REM.

Time to look for a new festival discussion site, folks.

lol - no, that's not what I was getting at at all.

I was making the point that REM will be (if they appear of course - but they'll do this somewhere in the UK this summer, if not Glasto) lower on the bill than other 'inferior' (in some people's minds) acts.

Some people need to face up to the fact that their time has been ... and gone. :)

Depends on your definitions - one could argue that Blur have "been and gone" and therefore shouldn't have headlined in 2008. Likewise the Who in 2007. (Though they actually shouldn't have headlined due to being dreadful.) It's all about who would draw the big crowds and I still think REM could draw a massive Pyramid crowd.

Anyway the cows have come home so I'm leaving it at that. Oh yeah, LOL.

rightly or wrongly there's a bigger buzz around a reform than there is a band who've never been away - which explains Blur.

And if REM had never headlined or played Glasto I'd say there was a chance that they'd be in with a shout as headliner this year (other options-dependent of course). But they have, and they're definitely less of a draw than they were back then, so not headlining this time is not an outrage, it's not a snub, it's just the right decision within the context of the fest and the context of the band's position today.

Is this really the case in England? Because speaking from a central european point of view (Rock Werchter, Rock am Ring, Roskilde, Lowlands, Pukkelpop) this is absolutely not true. R.E.M. would (if they will be announced) easliy headline over anybody and the festival crowd here is younger in comparison.

Yep. Relatively (to where they were a few years back) they're not the draw they once were, and there's plenty of newer acts who are more popular - especially when put alongside the fact that the biggest demographic for live music are younger people, those younger people are 'the future' for live audiences, and that they expect acts that are relevant to them to grab their interest.

That's not me saying that REM have no relevance to any younger people, but they will have had much greater relevance with them ten years ago than they do now.

Ultimately, it's a good thing that things move on, even if some have a problem accepting that they do - otherwise we'd have the same bands on constant repeat, and eventually they'd bore the pants off us all.

    • Another one from Sheffield DocFest this weekend, Earth Wind & Fire docu, directed by Questlove. Sensational archive footage, contributions from band members, family, plus a lot of very big fans (Stevie, Lionel, Flea, the Obamas) and a warts n all assessment of the genius / flawed human being that was Maurice White. Also, I never realised he started out as a jazz drummer with Ramsay Lewis. Well worth a watch.
