U is for Underworld

Watching the BBC4 documentary and that Underworld set came flooding back to me. One of the best. Anyone else there and remember it?

Just announced a new tour today - I just grabbed a Sat night ticket for Brixton Academy - woohoo!

New album on the way and the single is more than decent - surely an Other headline slot is well overdue? I know they're not quite as big as they were but Orbital got that slot last time and Underworld have something up their sleeves that the slaphead duo don't - an actual hit!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the slapheads (or slapheads in general, I'm one myself!) just saying that Underwold undoubtedly have a bigger commercial reach (for instance, I bet your daughter couldn't sing the lyrics to a single Orbital tune).

I've not been overly impressed with the new album if i'm honest. Maybe need to give it a bit more time.

Was a bit put out that the tour doesnt come anywhere near Birmingham, so would love them to play The Other Stage.

I just went 'ooooooohhhhhh' when I saw the tag on that thread. That 98 set in the mud is one of my all time favourite memories from the G (and one of the best live Born Slippys I've heard in the 30+ times I've seen them in the past 14 years).

I do think its a shame they havent made a reappearance at the festival once this century. If I had any money, I'd be at Brixton in a shot (along with the great Leftfield in December 2 weeks later!)

I really am holding out too much hope for the entire Premier League of Dance Music of 96/97 to be at the G next year but with every single one of them all back in our lives again, a girl can dream cant she?

From that list there is certainly the potential (going on who performed this year) for a minimum of 3 of that list to be near possibilities for appearring in 2011.

Still all fabulous, still all influential, still gaining new fans despite some not performing for nearly 10 years now...

I would die a very happy girl if there was a line up anything like what we got at Essential 1996 all over again!

I saw them in a wonderful thunderstorm, pyramid stage '99 (while the press were going mad over travis on the other stage) which was simply sublime. Stood in binbags, soaked to the skin, lighting forking around while they stormed through an amazing set.

I would love to see many of lusciouslucy's list also next year, for my mind ONE of those should close the other stage sunday, based on the storming sets from orbital this year and the prodigy last year which have led to me seeing this as the storming 90s dance collective slot

How can you forget that rain? It came from nowhere mid-afternoon, famously just as travis were breaking into "why does it always rain on me?" on the other stage. It was a great gig for sure, I'd been waiting for a chance to see them for a couple of years and they delivered for me

You are all quite correct, I have checked and it was Ash who were on the pyramid at the time, Underworld were a couple of acts later. My mistake.

What I didn't enjoy was the fecking dangerous crush trying to get out of the leftside bottom of the field as all those Manics fans came in after the Underworld set.

As it was the year of Star Wars and the Phantom Menace release, there were a lot of lightsabers in the crowd (including me and mine, YES I'm a geek!) By holding mine aloft, my chums had something to follow out towards the Jazz Stage for the Orbital show. There were mums with their bubs in prams and pushchairs that could barely get out. We shouted lots at people and helped them through.

Seriously one of the scariest crowd crush experiences ever at the G (And I blame the silly organisation that had 40,000 Underworld/Orbital fans all heading against the 40,000 Manics fans coming into the field against us for that). I still shudder to this day thinking back to those hairy moments.
