yup. i actually mentioned it the day it happened on here but got no replies. glad to see it being discussed now.

To be fair to him - and I've been trying to be fair, I made clear I wasn't knocking him but the job title he's been given - I doubt it's luck.

He's had an impressive career (which I said in that first post), and TGT pointed out he's played at a high level, which I was saying too.

Along with that, he's clearly someone who knows (at the very least) the right things to say to make the right impressions with the right people, because otherwise I wouldn't have thought he'd have been in with any shout of getting the M'bro job. I suspect it's much the same sorts of things which has landed him this job with the FA.

He might even turn out to be very good at the job (tho I have my doubts, from what he did at M'bro as manager, plus he still doesn't have his coaching badges).

It might be luck or bullshit, but I suspect it's more just the same old thing as been happening since the year dot, of his face fitting, of being polite to the right people and of taking to task the 'wrong' people.

I dunno about a 'great' career - he didn't play for the top teams, he didn't win much silverware, and was never lauded as one of the best in the world - but it was certainly very decent and way beyond what most players achieve.

He was extremely skillful - extremely skillful at reading the game, positioning, defending etc etc. So skillful in fact he played over 50 times for a country ranked in the top 15 in the world all the time he was playing.
