"David Gill, in the early part of the summer had opened talks with his agent and that was to be continued after the World Cup," Ferguson said.

"I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say he wasn't signing a contract. I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world.

"I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go."

So Utd are really in the shit then. They'll get a big pay-day for Rooney, sure (can't see him staying past January now), but money is no good without somewhere to spend it, IF they can spend it.

Will it be a big payday though? Selling to City or Chelsea is a massive risk in terms of strengthening their rivals. I think his value will be a lot lower than has been touted.

Utd know they can't compete with either anyway. Sooner or later they'll have to accept that reality, and the sooner they do the more they can expliot the cash that comes in return.

If they want to play hardball all they'll succeed in doing is getting themselves a worse deal than they otherwise could do.

(eg. Mourinho)

Do you seriously think Moaniho will get the Utd job?:blink:

I know he's desperate for it, but if he does that'll be more an expression of Utd's desperation than anything to do with Moaniho.

I just can't see them wanting him, not in a million years of sensible thought.

I think Mourinho would be a good fit there, the only real problem is that he doesn't build teams so the likes of Moyes are ahead of him.

yep, outside of desperate I see Moyes as getting the job too. He's everything that the club likes to regard itself as, while Moaniho definitely isn't.
