Having a band of Coldplay's stature wouldn't make too much difference with that - after all, they're far from being everyone's favourite.

Not sure I agree with that - I rarely see the first band on, but i'd venture out for Coldplay (and I reckon a *lot* of others would too).

Yep, I'm sure many would.

But it'd still be far fewer people than there'd be for any headliner performance, or even for nearly any Pyramid afternoon performer.

That's fair enough and you obviously know more than me but is there any precedent for someone of Coldplay's size playing that early - it's a bit of an unknown isn't it?

People lying in bed with a raging hangover aren't going to think "Must. Get . Pyramid. Kate. Nash.." but they might just do it for Coldplay.

I'd agree that it's a bit of an unknown - aside from the fact that it's known that many Glastonites simply don't get up that early.

I'd guess that there's normally far less than 10% of attendees that are out and about to catch the first band. If it increased by 600% (to 60% of everyone there) because Coldplay were playing there'd still be no crowd issues.

So I reckon that's a huge margin there, which is more than adequate to cover a surprisingly large crowd turning up.

I like them, My friend doesn't but it's traditional that we go see the Pyramid opener even if it's a terrible band. I don't know why but that's what we do.

Coldplay crowd would be in the region of 40-50K. Similar size to the Quo last year. Less if it was rainy.

I remember there being a big crowd for The Darkness in 2004, but the weather that Friday was quite nice.

All about the weather really.

So many of the last few years, the Friday morning weather has been rubbish, including 2005, 2007, 2008 and even 2009 it was a muddy start.

I think this definitely needs to happen, regardless of my opinion of Coldplay, they're f**king huge.

If only for bragging rights for the Festival on its 40th Birthday, because to be honest "the most staggering line up to celebrate the 40th anniversary" is not what I see at this moment in time. So Coldplay opening and a few other big names on the other days, and Glastonbury can reign supreme.

If they can get thousands upon thousands of people to the pyramid stage for the first main attraction* - the England game on Wednesday - than Coldplay won't be anywhere near as much of a problem.

1. More people will watch the football than Coldplay.

2. There will be other stages starting at the same time as Coldplay if they were to open the main stage, hence more choices for anyone not too fussed about Coldplay.

There is a difference with the football though in that everyone won't be on site by kick off - loads of people arrive Thursday.

Yup - and how many will be watching England on Wednesday? I'd say more than that.

In what must have been 2004 and the Euros were on, the biggest crowd anywhere in the world (bigger than in the stadium where the game was played) to watch that match was at Glasto - estimated at 65,000.

To be honest, and I'm no Coldplay fan, it would be quite sad if a football match got a much bigger attendance than arguably the biggest band ever to open the festival.

If they announce it, or it's leaked then it will of course be a very large crowd. Simple consideraton of album sales and ticket sales confirms this, (ignore general forums hatred - not consistent with general glasto crowd). Compared to other mid afternoon acts such as Willie Nelson, Seasick Steve or Vampire Weekend? Yes bigger. Particularly on a Friday, audience being still relativley freshed faced and up for the event of the opening, (11/12 am is not that early on the first day. Sunday - yes!). Will the crowd spread out to see a huge act like Magic Numbers? mmmm. A crowdsize issue? No - as the festival has had much more people in that field when the fence was down...Have just bored myself..

whilst I'm not fond of speculating or commenting on speculation, just this once.....

I feel that Coldplay opening the Pyramid has the potential to be very special, moving even. Even if you don't like them or their music. They do have the power to sway. I've seen hard men cry, that got dragged along to watch them, thinking they disliked them intently.
