This has been one of the best ever headlines to wake up to. I still cant stop saying how amazing this is. I mean, you usually hear of this shit happening in the Phillippines/Java and so on but finally the UK is getting a taste of the same medicine good old Gaia has been dealing to far more unfortunate third world countries recently.

I adore natural disasters but in the sense that humans just have to bloody well realise that THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO PLANET EARTH. WE ARE NOT GODS!!!

Consider the following potential all overdue events waiting to hit a certain Western country:

The day that the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts and it really is the end for humanity the world over, the Cumbre Vieja slips into the Atlantic Ocean and creates a 100 metre high tsunami heading directly west, the Juan De Fuca plate slips creates a 300 year overdue tsunami heading east, a Hawaiian island has a giant landslip on the north eastern side of the state, Mt Rainier erupts and covers Seattle under 30 meters of mud, the San Andreas Fault finally gives up the 'Big One'...any of them...

the US is f**kED...all of these happening at once...I'll wait til the planet destroying ash cloud from the supervolcano gets to the UK and then get a bit panicky but in the meantime will be sitting there watching the mayhem unfold on the box and a thousand times better than any Jerry Bruckheimer movie!!!

speaking of natural disasters, i heard about the asteroid Apophis (named after the egyptian god of death & darkness) which is headed our way. on friday 13th of april 2029 it will skim past the earth, actually closer to earth than geostationary satellites. there is a margin of error of exactly where it will be but it definitely won't hit earth, but it it goes through a 600 metre 'keyhole' it definitely will hit earth next time around its orbit, in 2036, and will hit the pacific ocean about 100 miles off the californian coast.

when the asteroid hits it will explode sending a tsunami ten times bigger than the indonedian one. the explosion will leave a 3 mile deep and 3 mile wide hole in the ocean which will collapse in on itself sending a plume of water into the atmosphere (like when you throw a pebble in a stream), the plume will fall back into the ocean sending an even bigger tsunami after the first one.

of course the chances of it going through the 'keyhole' are pretty slim, but still possible.

why are you surprised? remember the snow? it was the worst thing ever! then they interviewed some people who were all like 'what's the problem? we're off work, the kids are off school and we're out sledging and throwing snowballs.'

We actually have technology which can be used to alter the path of any asteroid we're worried about by focusing the solar energy of the sun onto the side of it and slowly 'pushing it' in the direction we want, via some chemical reactions or something. I think it needs to be done over a 10 year period but if we were truly worried about the asteroid then we'd be okay to begin an epic project of moving the thing away.

I can't seem to find any internet source for it though - my lecturer went off on a tangent about it in an astronomy class though :/. He could have been exhaggerating but I'm sure it's true to some extent!
