I'm not a dance music person, infact, in god knows how many years since there's been a dance stage/village at Glastonbury, any time I've been in that area, I've felt a bit nervous, a bit edgy, you know? I'm an indie kid, well, 40, but going on 25. I like my guitars, and songs. I'm sure a lot of you can appreciate that. But, I'd LOVE to understand a bit more dance music. I don't get the genres really... give me a "Dummies" to Dance music. Some stuff to try maybe. Please :P

I am 46 and I have loved dance music without class As.

I can remember going to a litle place called The Wildlife Club in about 1988, and actually just hoping that after a while they might play something else because I wasn't into it atall - but of course they didn't. After a while though, in amongst the maze of beats I started to connect with a rythmn somewhere in it that i recognised and connected with, and from there, I found as i got more comfortable, I( began to like kind of working in all the other beats as it went along, and from there i started to like it, then love it.

So that would be my tip. Listen carefully - theres a beat in there somewhere that you love - and from there you start to connect with the rest of it. Well - thats what worked for me!

tbf, it's not surprising that you are confused/intimidated by dance music, when you look at the amount of genres and sub genres, there is a crap load of it about. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres).

If you are a bit of an indie, then the best place to start would be with a bit of indie/dance/electro. Kinda obvious, but there is no point in starting with something that will be properly unfamiliar. I'd start with artists such as 2manydj's, erol alkan, felix da housecat, daft punk, armand van helden, and then work back from there.

I was a bit of an indie kid a few years ago, but the 4/4 beat took me in, and now i can't get enough house + techno!!!! it's all about finding the right music and the right situation, at some point, it will all click (but, i suppose you could say that about any music!!).

These days I have to take loads of pills AFTER a night of dancing cos my knees and back cant take the pounding. :P

The amount of ibuprofen I knock back these days is astounding...but great for easing all the aches and pains :P

Discovering 3 weeks back that I still 'have it' when it comes to dancing like I used to when I sued to do a wee bit of podium dancing...quite a few years ago I will say...was brilliant. And all it took was a free night of filthy electro techno at Audio. Not being able to sit/walk easily without my knees being in utter for pain for nearly a week following was...on the other hand...NOT like it used to be in my uni days :P

For the first time in 2 and a half years I went to a club (Matter) in London last week...whoa...the crowds have changed somewhat!

I have been dancing for 3 weekends on the trot now and have a rather worrying pain developing in the middle of my shin! f**king strange place to get a pain although its roughly where I injured myself 20 or so years ago when I fell down a drain. Glad I am having a weekend off this week...although I would have loved to have gone to Trash at the Roundhouse.

I'm playing catch up for spending a year and a half not getting out much...living in a van in Oz and then barmy farming college kinda put pay to any clubbing!

OP...dance music...best place to start is with the Premier League...the Usual Suspects:

Chems

Orbital

Leftfield

Underworld

Prodigy

Daftee Punkee

Faithless

(Fatboy...sort of)

The combined back catalogue of those artists go back over 20 years in the history of dance music and although they may not cover every single area, they are all a bloody good starting point and if you dont get the taste for what a decent beat is by the end of a listen then your best best is to stick with guitars and not worry your pretty little head anymore.

BUT on the other hand if you want a life changing experience and be utterly blown away entertained by music from electrical machinery and not instruments...then definitely hightail it to the Second Stage on Sunday night at Glasto this year to catch the Hartnolls deliver a historic set. Complete with lasers and stunning visuals.

I was a pure Levellers fan in 1994 and nothing electronic was allowed near me...I 'detested it'...yukc yuck yucky yuck!!! My then boyfriend...who hated the Levs...stuck on the Brown Album...forced me to listen to it...needless to say my life changed on a sixpence...I didnt see the Levs again until 2 years ago and from 1995 onwards have seen Orbital 35 times! :P:P

Kinda like me, I like my indie/rock mainly but there's lots of other stuff I like, including some dance. I find I prefer the live side of dance music which is not too far away from yours and my guitars. The likes of pendulum as has already been said, but others like Faithless, Groove Armada, Fluke are also a good start.

Underworld, in my opinion, are one of the best on or off drugs (I've experienced them in both states of mind!). In particular you might listen to 'Everything Everything' or even watch the live DVD version (featuring footage of when they played at Glasto in '99 - amazing.) as that's a good cross section of their work.

Underworld...definitely a band/group you DONT need Class A's for. The beats are so intense that they give you such a massive rush without the need for anything extra coursing through your veins...tbh...its too much to take if you do! :P

PS...I think the Glasto footage on Everything Everything is 98 not 99 cos its the 2nd stage they show not the Pyramid. I may be wrong there. The 98 show was stunning...dancing like a total loon in foot deep very wet mud to a stunning performance of Born Slippy (before it totally became the monster cliche it is today...it was still acceptable back then). :P BUT...the entire dvd is very worth getting your hands on to experience what one of their shows can be like.

Orbital may be my fave band on the planet but Underworld actually win hands down when it comes to live performances for the intensity of the shows...especially if like me you are within yards of the speakers and attached/clinging to the front barrier, rocking back and forth in a tranced out state to the hard hard beats! I dont think there has ever been a time when I have gone to an Underworld concert in 15 years and not come back with a neck injury! :P
