So do we know the headliners?

I have been considering going alone to EOTR for the last 3 years and this year seems to be shaping up to be a good year. I find the line-up so far to be really appealing and I think that one more good act would probably nail it for me - so my question is this do we now know who the headliners are - i know Wilco are confirmed as headliners but are Iron and Wine and Low anthem the others? or are there others still to be added?

There was a comment from the EOTR boys and girls on Facebook yesterday, suggesting that they don't know who the headliners will be until the bill is pretty much complete. I mean, Wilco is an obvious one, because they are massive. And I dare say if they were to secure the services of a National or a Sufjan Stevens (for example) their decision would be made for them.

Apparently they've been amazed at how popular the New Pornographers have proved to be, so should they not manage to get any REALLY big names, I wouldn't be surprised to see them bumped up to headline status.

But what do I know?

According to their website, Wilco are playing EoTR on the Sunday. I'm sure they'll be headlining that day.

(This is all guesswork, I don't have any special insights): If you look over previous festivals, it seems that there tends to be one alt-country act, one more left field act, and one slightly more mainstream rock act (broadly speaking). At a wild guess, I expect there will be an act to fit the Super Furries/Mercury Rev/Explosions in the Sky psych/post-rock category (Flaming Lips would be the most obvious example, but as they're playing Green Man I suspect not).

Personally I thought New Pornographers might be the headliner for the first night, but maybe I just overestimate their popularity.

I agree with comments above that we will see further headliners announced; can't see Low Anthem or Iron and Wine headlining. Also agree you should get your ticket anyway - the great thing about EoTR is that bands play long sets even if they're not headlining.

I agree that Wilco are the only "planned" headliners but EOTR definitely book the best bands they can and then set about shaping those bands into a line-up.

And, yes, if anyone is travelling alone I've organised a "billy-no-mates" camp the past couple of years that has been a great laugh and means that you'll always have someone to chat to, wander around with, etc, should you wish. Details nearer the time.

I saw Midlake a few weeks back in London. The set comprised mostly of the new album, which is a little understated (but still great, IMO) but the songs rocked nicely in a live setting. Yeah, of course Roscoe and Head Home were the highlights, but the new stuff sounded good.

Not sure they're headline material, but last year's Okkervil River slot would suit them down to the ground.

The only thing is, I believe they're back over here in November for a show at the Roundhouse, so I'd be surprised at another UK show in September.

I thought Midlake were there in 2007 but didn't headline? Wasn't it Yo La Tengo, Lambchop and Super Furry Animals? I have not yet heard the new Midlake album or seen them live but a friend of mine who has said they were quite "boring"...I love Occupanther + Bamnan and Slivercork and Milkmaid are both OK but is there enough material to get the crowd going as a headliner? I suppose they could keep encoring "Head Home" and "Roscoe"! :P

  • 2 weeks later...

I thought time zones were always on topic

And what about that wacky daylight saving time? Is that weird or what?

I heard the Japanese were thinking about adopting their own version of daylight saving time.

Japanese people are weird.

The topic is now tentacles.

Discuss.

Iron & Wine of 5 years ago would definitely be too mellow to headline, but the current Iron & Wine could possibly do it. On the most recent tour, at some points they were rocking and grooving like an early 70's Band (seen them on the telly :P ). It was nothing short of damn brilliant. Probably still not popular enough to headline, but I could see them playing the Garden Stage just one before the headliner, leaving the headliner with a serious act to follow...

"Jonsi, front-man of Icelandic post-rock giants Sigur Ros, will be joining in with the 'Year of the Fantastic' playing material from his debut solo album, 'Go' which will be released in April. His Bestival appearance will be one of only two UK festival shows this year."

didn't fleet foxes play bestival as well as headline EOTR last year?

and haven't sigur ros been at the top of EOTR's wishlist since the start?

maybe i'm being rather too hopeful........but.......

    • 1. Baby Dave - Billy 2. A - Prang   Not really got round to listening to many more in May so not really fair to vote but shoutout to EPs from Bleech 9:3 - Bleech 9:3 & Villanelle - Measly Means
    • Guitarricadelafuente was bloody brilliant tonight. This is going to be a very Spanish focussed year for me. Rusowsky dragging out Las Ketchup on Saturday has the potential to be a Prima magic moment.
    • £112 for standard entry. No thank you.
    • Meanwhile Gracie Abrams is £92 for the cheapest with the average price around £160 for lower tier and £103 standing.   First time in a while I've gone from a definite yes to a definite no on price alone.   Amble was £31 this morning.
