i mean i'm no completely sure if it is a word anyway but surely if festivalling was a word then it would be spelt with 2 l's and not one as we can see up there right now?

really? Which one is that? I checked it out in a number of dictionaries (but not any thesauri), and found nothing.

But anyway, it can't be a huge faux pas, seeing as it's been there for over a year yet the OP has only just commented on it.

I've just checked in the 20 volume OED (and the online database) there's reference to 'festival' as a noun, and an adjective (although that's archaic) but not as a noun and hence a gerund

yup its not a word as i said but if it was to be made a word then there are certain rules that should be adhered to, and the general rule here is that if the letter before the "a" is a vowel or a soft consonant then one "l" should be used. In this case the "v" is most definitely a hard consonant and therefore a double "l" should be used.

What you mean is some people have made up some rules after the event, because they think it makes them big and clever - and powerful: "we control the words".

I dont really "get" the first part of this rant

It wasn't a rant - it was a statement of fact. Those who set the rules hold power.

That doesn't prove anything about any right they might have had to set those rules - all it proves is that they've demanded a right to be the ones to set those rules. People can chose to accept their right to do that, or not.

Given that the vast majority of words we commonly use have come to be spelt the way that they are by convention and not by some body claiming a right to define how new words should be spelt, why should that body be given such a power now? The world worked perfectly well without any body doing that, they don't add anything to the language - only to their belief of their own importance.
