Where did I say that?

They are the original, big, modern indie group.

Name a contemporary indie band as large as they were before they were.

As far as I'm aware they were the first large act of the current indie mob.

The White Stripes, REM, Flaming Lips, to name a few but I think the biggest Indie group to come out of anywhere and 1 album proves it; Radiohead. That album being OK Computer and its pioneering music from then on from them. Arguably the best indie album (or best album full stop) ever made by the biggest indie group ever, I think.

You wouldnt think who were were indie acts?? White Stripes walk all over the Strokes. Plus I don't think the Strokes are as good as everyone makes them out to be. They're alright. One album and everyone thinks they're the gods of the indie scene? I think they have a shit load more to prove. Still, a huge draw for Rockness.

I wouldn't put any of them as indie. The current 'indie' crop are act like the Artic Monkeys, The Libertines, Razorlight etc etc

Not only is your genres wrong in my view but with REM and Radiohead your timing is wildly out. They are both products of the 90s(REM could be argued for the 80s also)where the current batch are products of the 00s.

If you say indie to the modern world the majority of people think of the 2000s NME bunch pretty much, now I either hate or am indifferent to most of these acts but that is the moden definition(even if it is a far cry from its routes).

Depends entirely on your definition of an indie group. Indie music has been around since the early 80's, maybe even before, and there's no doubting it has changed in the style of music to this day but an indie group is defined by the way it sells records and markets themselves and many other ways. For example, in 2007, Radiohead put their album on their website for free. You could buy it if you wanted but the point was to cut out the middle man, the greedy record company. Thats got 'independent' (indie) written all over it and one the boldest moves in modern music history. You could name a thousand bands that are indie from as early as the Ramones to Arctic Monkeys to current dance acts defined as indie but the way they go about producing music is what defines them.

And to summarise my original point, Radiohead were streets ahead of The Strokes as an indie group and still are. Still, can't wait to see them.

I'd guess it's also a generation thing.

I mean if you say to your average Rockness punter 'would you class the Strokes as indie?', the majority would say yes. 'What about Radiohead?' Majority would say no. Then ask 'would you put The Libertines, Razorlight, Artic Monkeys, The Courteeners etc in with The Strokes?' Theyd say yes.

Now it doesn't really matter who is correct but that is now the definition, nothing to do with how it is made but how it sounds. Do a poll on here and I'm sure it'd back me up.
