U2 for R&L?

:P:P:P:P:(

sorry but U2 decide to play glasto for the first time ever (I admit i was surprised they had never played before) and suddenly people go might they play......?

R&L no chance. look closer at the tour list and look at the time off. glasto is one thing but doing R&L is another.

Now I don't mean no disrespect to R&L and for all those that are saying good I hope they don't I say good on you. But despite what people think about U2 they still sell stadiums. (ok not always but largely) so they don't need to do a metallica and an rem and downgrade. Glasto is not a downgrade. But all other festivals are. ( from bono ego point of view)

The same Idea was expressed on the T forum and I think that is a joke. However, it is at least understandable to an extent. (Bono at one time was rumoured to be buying Celtic and added scottish gigs after tour managers missed them because venues were less than half the size needed)

But R&L why?

metallica can still sellout stadium tours they're just not as up their arses as U2, a little up their own arses but not as much, they also give a shit about the fans a lot more than U2, shown by the extensive touring they've always done

Doubt it, they are using Glastonbury to try and lift their somewhat falling stature.

Their last album sold poorly by their standards and even they have admitted that they were disappointed with the sales. They've had a lot less airplay and media coverage this time round, How to dismantle.. and the Vertigo tour were huge but this hasn't been so big and tickets did not sell out at the pace or in the quantity they would have wanted.

I would guess they are using Glastonbury to try and get back in the spotlight again and get back onto the mainstream media. They have had a severe lack of airplay and media attention on this run and I guess Glasto will be just the tonic for them.

IWith the prices they charge, they would make more from doing arenas nevermind stadiums than any festival could ever hope to pay to them. Live Nation own their touring rights, doing their own gigs at high prices with an awful lot of VIP packages is the only way they will make money on their investment, festivals pay well but not for bands at that level.

Glastonbury pays peanuts compared to r/l, think its around the £100,000 mark to r/l million. If it was all about the money they would play r/l. Real coup for glasto, not been a massive since zooropa myself.

Although they get a shit load more exposure playing the best festival and the most over exposed festival in the media.

Sorry Moz I was doing a little bit of PUI last night.

Yes Mettalica do still sell stadiums and its short sighted to only look to their European arena shows. However, I remember when they started to play more and more festivals and really struggled to sell the download gig on glasgow green.

I also remember hearing that a lot of fans were really angry with them for their war with napster but also for trying to close down their own fans sites if they contained guitar tabs.

Wasn't great over here though.

They sold a lot at Wembley, but loads of empty's at Hampden and Sheffield. First time they won't have filled a venue over here for a long long time.

They have shifted an awful lot of tickets in the states and that is where Live Nation will make their money off them. They've done well in most of Europe too, I'm just saying the demand to see U2 in this country is nowhere near where it was when they did Vertigo. IMO they are playing Glasto to lift their falling media profile, they got nowhere near the mainstream TV and radio coverage that they got when they released How To Dismantle.
