IF they were to play, the crowd would be full of people who wanted to see them, whereas the U2-haters would be elsewhere. Anyone who would go and watch a band they despised clearly needs to get a life, especially in a place like Glasto with hundreds of other alternatives.

Look at the fuss loads of people made over Jay-Z, yet he played to an enthusiastic, large crowd. I went to see him to see what he was about. Not really my thing, but the last thing I'd do would be to turn up at a stage when I hated the act in question. I had no idea what Jay-Z would be like, so I went to find out. What Glasto is about for me.

If U2 played, they'd have a HUGE crowd, there for no other reason than to enjoy the music.

...jaysus, there's been an awful amount of time spent in this thread by people who don't like U2...if you don't like them, then don't go and see them if they play, there's plenty of other stuff to see and do. For the record, if they played I'd be there, though if REM (my favourite band) were on the other stage at the same time then I'd give U2 a miss...simple really. I used to like U2 way back when, I haven't bought a U2 album since All that you can't leave behind, and went to see them this year for the first time in ages, basically because somebody else bought me a ticket....but it was a great show. I had a blast, and hearing the unforgettable fire live again was immense!

Most of the vitriol in this thread seems to stem from a particular hatred of Bono rather than U2's music. Many people admit they made some great records in the '80s, early '90s, and they actually still play a lot of this even when touring a new album, so I think a festival set would certainly entertain the masses. The other problem people seem to have is either the extravagance of the current tour, or it's carbon footprint. The band have a carbon offsetting programme to deal with that...a sign of the times, in years gone by nobody would have bothered...but U2 have always been environmentally friendly and have supported greenpeace for many years, in fact I distinctly remember U2 championing the anti-sellafield campaign very vocally (something that's quite close to our hearts over this side of the Irish sea), so making glib comments about replacing greenpeace signs with blackberry ones betrays a lack of insight into many of the things the band have stood for over the years. Additionally, the cost of the tour is up to U2....if they want to spend their money giving their fans their money's worth at a gig then that's their choice (they even had £30 tickets for the shows, when was the last time you saw a band of U2's stature for £30??)...they give plenty of money to charity anyway, sometimes obviously, sometimes less (they donated £5m to an arts project here in Ireland recently for example, but I doubt that made worldwide news)...complaining that Apple don't donate the proceeds of the U2 iPod to charity is a bit silly when they also sell a (RED) iPod the proceeds of which do go to charity (whatever your view of that campaign)...

As for Bono, yes he's a pain in the arse, but he doesn't preach all that much live, it's some of his other mannerisms that are irritating...I personally think it's a good thing that he continues to highlight the plight of Aung San Suu Kyi during their gigs, and I think it was quite brave of the band to continue to support the protesters in Iran and scroll Farsi across the screen during Sunday Bloody Sunday while playing in America given the fact that American audiences aren't exactly known for their love of Islam!...

I just get fed up last year with people saying Bruce is going to be the best thing ever and biggest event ever to happen at Glasto, and I'll be damned if I'm putting up with it again this year. Next year some other huge stadium group will be rumoured to play or booked to play, and we'll see the same thing.

there really aren't that many 'huge stadium groups/acts' left that haven't played glasto, and that's one of the exciting things about anticipating who will be next one that Eavis manages to pull. McCartney, Springsteen and Bowie have done it and that just about takes care of big famous mega solo acts who could fill stadiums. I wouldn't put Prince and Madonna in their category and they're the only biggies i can think of who haven't done it yet.

as for bands...all we really have left for newbies are the Stones, U2 and i guess you could say Metallica (who would never be considered). and don't go mentioning things that don't and won't exist, ie. Led Zep or Pink Floyd or a Smiths (who've played) reunion.
