I totally disagree. Giving a shit for your immediate environment and those who use it is important. Environmental issues from picking up a fag butt to saving the whale is incredibly relevant today, and it is the little things that make a difference, and if this means clearing up your crap after 5 days in a field, then so be it.

As I have bored people with before on threads such as this... we tidy up, less litter pickers needed, less money spent on them etc etc etc. There really is no need to leave the little bit of Somerset you've occupied for 5 days in a mess... if you do, its lazy and disrespectful.

we left behind a black bag of rubbish and a recycling bag along with a few tins of beer we never drank and a gas can we couldn't take as we were flying home. (we did try give it away to neighbours but they didnt need/want it)

I did a fairly good sweep of our camp had disposable gloves which were ment for untying muddy boots but came in use for cleaning!

My points were,

1) There is no environmental relevance. The litter, at the end of the day, will all end up in the same place, regardless of how people act.

2) You cannot change anything. If people leave it in a mess, they leave it in a mess. A thread on efests wont lead to anything being changed.

I seriously hate the morons who generally abandon their cr@p all over the place for no remotely good or acceptable reason and have ranted about it plenty of times over the years ! However, those above suggesting that trying to change peeps attitudes is a bit of a waste of time do, unfortunately, have a point I'm afraid There will always be absolutely no shortage of morons who just don't care and won't listen no matter what.

TBH, the problem is so much more than peeps simply not caring at Glasto (and other festivals etc.) it's a fundamental issue with many peeps almost always preferring to make their 'problem' someone else's problem rather than taking personal responsibility for things various because it's easy to do and so much less hassle than doing the 'right' thing. Whilst genuinely not intending to go all Daily Mail and all that, it seems to have become a somewhat ingrained culture much along the same lines as binge drinking and so on. Everyone *must* understand that it's not good for a whole load of reasons but then again (just about) everyone else is doing it and so it a becomes a sad fact of life for no particularly good or valid reason.

I'm unfortunate enough to live in Studentville although it's rapidly turning more into Immigrantville or pretty much just rent_a_dodgy_room_for_a_few_weeks_then_b*gger_off_elsewhere_ville in general these days. You could furnish several houses with the amount of cr@p various that's regularly abandoned in the area when peeps move on. It's way beyond a joke. Buy cheap stuff then simply dump it when it becomes a nuisance either because it's broken, you don't want it anymore or you simply can't be @rsed to pack it up and take it with you. Happens all the time but particularly so at the start/end of Uni terms and so on.

The latest thing seems to be nick a trolley from Asda, fill it with all your cr@p various, shove it somewhere up the road in the middle of the night and just leave it there for someone else deal with. Everything from massive great fridge/freezers, TVs, bits of furniture, personal stuff in general ... to what often appears to be almost the entire contents of a room. Even some of the complete @rses that own/maintain the rent-a-room places seem to be adopting much the same attitude - empty the place and/or do repairs after the previous occupants have wrecked it then just dump the cr@p somewhere in the area. Fitted a new bog cos the last tenant broke it and not sure what to do with the old one ? No problemo, just dump it somewhere locally that's relatively quiet at night along with the load of stuff that got left behind and that's everything all sorted ready for the next moron to move in. No need to have to take it up the tip and/or generally pay to have it disposed off sensibly and responsibly when there's always that mythical 'someone else' to do it for you is there.

Yes. There are many more reasons to worry about the actions of others than how a festival looks on monday morning before the hired cleaners come in.

Personally id like it if someone set up a website called "love your bar" where people made a special effort to support people bringing their glasses back to the bar, disposing of all ciggerette butts in the outside ashtrays, throwing up in the toilets or outside, not leaving glasses in the urinals and only putting glass bottles in the glass bottle bins.

But no one is going to do that are they. Even if it meant that all the staff would sign out 30mins earlier each week and would ensure that a price of beer was a little cheaper. Whats the difference, seriously.

As far as i'm concerned my pitch/tent is my home. I wouldn't sit amongst empty beer cans and food containers in my house, so i'm not gonna do it in the vicinity of my tent. Keeping it tidy as i go along makes complete sense and means that when i leave i don't have to tidy anything up.

People leaving things (be it rubbish, tents, gazebos, whatever) is obviously wrong but i think the people who do it have so little regard for their own surroundings and environment that it's gonna be pretty difficult to persuade them to think about anyone else's.

Thats it for me - even more than how it's left on Monday, it's the state of it all weekend! I don't understand how people don't get this - why spend £200 odd on a ticket for a festival in beautiful countryside, and then happily turn it into a tip?

I can look upwards at the rolling hills and the gorgeous flags, and then I have to look down at cans, and wrappers, and the leftovers of someone's dinner. It spoils it.

I have said it before - tidying up after yourself isn't work, it is basic adult self care, and the cost of a ticket doesn't include someone cleaning up after you, any more than it would include someone to wash and dress you. We are big boys and girls now and we can look after ourselves surely?

I hate to be anal about this, but I think the small actions DO matter. I don't think there are any cows roaming around my local. Not of the actual bovine variety at least. So in that regard there certainly is a difference between a festival site and a bar. The wind won't blow through a bar and whisk the detritus off into nearby shrubbery. Birds don't typically fly into the local club and eat the cigarette butts and so on.

I get really iritated by the whole idea that everything is someone elses responsibility. Thinking that the actions of one doesn't add up. Take a look around folks. We get precisely what we give.

An interesting comparison, I have camped at numerous Grand Prix over Europe. We are taking about 20,000 - 50,000 people camping - not little campsites !!

Silverstone on the Sunday evening / Monday morning is not altogether dissimilar to scenes in that video, although not as bad.

Monza in Italy is a big improvement - but not great

Spa in Belgium was really clean - however lots of much smaller campsites rather than one huge site

The biggest contrast, however, are the German Races at the Nurburgring and Hockenheim. The sites were immaculate afterwards - everybody cleaned up after themselves - amazing !!! And if anybody has spent 4 days partying with 40,000 Germans - you will understand how much rubbish is created. This was also done without enforcement or Green Police

BTW - I love the Germans - they party better than us

Perhaps I'm conditioned wrongly but this surprised me. I've been to Germany twice and have met many Germans in the UK/abroad. I even speak a little German so can break the ice a bit. I haven't met any who struck me as party animals.

The fact that they clean up after themselves doesn't surprise me. Neither did the story today about the German milliionaires who are petitioning the German chancellor to make them pay more tax. Fair minded, efficient and patriotic they are. Party Monsters?....I'll take your word for it.
