For those that don't get the concept of 'live' dance music

As above, there seems to be a huge number of people here that just can't get their heads around live dance performance, and refuse to acknowledge it as anything more than just DJing (not aimed at anyone in particular).

Have a look at these vids if you need convincing it is genuinely live performance, they may not use instruments in the 'traditional' sense but the use of hardware by some modern dance acts is seriously impressive.

This year a friend of ours mate who camped with us joined me and my rabble for deadmous5. she never understood the work and effort that goes into live dance music. since then she has joined us for orbital and is now fully converted. it IS an art

Not only do they"not use instuments in the traditional sense"....they dont use instuments at all.

I'm with your friends and the many others who like music where people play instruments or sing.

I'm not saying that it's easy to do what these people do. It obviously takes a lot of skill but they are not musicians in my eyes.

You like it and thats great....I just dont get it...and don't want to.

How is using a hardware controller to make sounds different to, say, an electric guitar?

It's a good thing that we all like different things otherwise we'd all be standing in front of the same stages. You enjoy your fake music and I'll enjoy real people play instuments and sing

I never used to 'get it' ... but have skirted around the edges and had a look and I understand the skill and the fact that it's a different type of skill, and still about people enjoying music

Having stood backstage on the Thursday evening as Zane Lowe did his stuff on the 'BBC introducing stage' and seeing the crowd how he sees them from the stage made me have a new appreciation

I still prefer 'non dance' music on the other stages but thats a personal preference... plus if ever I went to the dance village with hubby I would lose him for the rest of the festival

Its not about how you deliver the music, its a matter of the music coming out of the speakers being good and the audience enjoying it.

not my first choice style of music but horses for courses as they say. there must also be a genuine skill to it or everybody would be doing it.

spent more time than normal in the dance village this year and really enjoyed it.

first band i saw this year was also in the dance village, THE EGG abs amazing, live playing and electronica, mixing.

Depeche Mode always played proper instruments, because they were using synths before sequencers were available.

My view is, if with whatever you have in your hands, you can switch to an arbitrary tune on a whim, then you're playing an instrument. If you're restricted to tunes you've pre-programmed, then you're not. That says nothing about the skill or value in pre-programming. I'm just defining "playing an instrument".

(Not sure about using the word "tune", but you know what I mean. It doesn't mean I don't count drums, or Mixmaster Mike scratching)

Now, I happen to find watching people play instruments very entertaining. Some instruments more than others. For example a guitar is more entertaining than a piano, because the player can be more mobile, and more visible.

Acts that rely on sequencers have an entertainment vacuum caused by the absence of people playing instruments. They have to fill that vacuum with something else. The better ones manage to do so.

Like many others I was brought up on guitar music - Zeppelin, The Who, Hendrix, etc, and they all hold a special place to me still. I never really delved into dance music until I started going to festivals, and it was an awakening. It's all about the atmosphere. My girlfriend dragged me to David Guetta at Glastonbury this year, and it was immense, probably one of the best sets I saw all weekend all told.

Open your mind people, there's a whole world of music out there just waiting to rock you. If you need to see a guitar on stage, give Pendulum and Soulwax a shot first - phenomenal live bands.

i don't really care how the sound is made as long as it's a good sound and i enjoy myself and will just as happily watch the arcade fire as i will justice.

saying that it is good that these guys really do seem to be playing stuff, even if i don't understand it as opposed to just pressing the play button!
