Just to help everyone out, I went through the Wikipedia pages of the entire England squad, and sorted them into saints, sinners, and neutral. There may well be stuff (good and bad) that Wikipedia leaves out, but I imagine the most significant stuff is there.

I do know that the england football team are among the most pampered, preening, grotesquely overpaid, vain, spoilt, adulterous, abusive, disrespectful, self centred, conceited, arrogant, prima donnas on the face of the planet. And the thought of seeing the likes of them on the big screen of the pyramid stage alongside the banners of Greenpeace, oxfam and wateraid makes my want to vomit.

Modern day footballers are the symbol of everything that is wrong with the world today. £100,000 a week frauds on the big screen alongside pictures of people dying due to a lack of water. What a ghastly juxtaposition, and one that has no place at glastonbury.

I'm going to say it again, cos it seems to have been missed, but football and music are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination, it's pretty daft to compare them. Especially when people are talking about supporting their country or whatever. Chalk and Cheese

No, it's naive to pretend that an artist's actions don't have an effect on how their work is presented or viewed. why don't you hear Gary Glitter records on the radio anymore? why is there still contoversy over Clapton, or Wagner or whatever? because the two things are inextricably linked. I prsonally think it's impossible and morally dubious to separate the art from the artist.

It's pretty simple.

Just show the England and other games where the cinema field was in 08 on that giant screen or in a large tent if it's a day time kick off.

People are whinging about the prima donna stars that play but you've got to remember that the world cup is actually a celebration of the worlds faviroute sport and a coming together of the nations that play and love it.

When you look at the actual parties that take place in the host cities they are great big carnivals and almost festival like (yeah you do get the odd fat twat throwing a chair but they are massively outnumbered by supporters actaully partying together and enjoying themselves).

Thats the reason why people are so desperate to watch the tournament wherever they are, because it's more a celebration than a tournament.

@ukslim, sorry, I'm not sure this is very clear. I think it's much better as a discussion in the boozer with a few pints rather than via the internet.

I think there's a difference in how people interact with music and sport, one is competetive, one's not. If you (not YOU you, but you know what I mean ) watch England football it's tied up with notions of patriotism, with cultural/national identity, with an expectation or hope that your team will beat another team and will win a trophy. It's measurable and objective. That's completely different from how you view music, or from how I view music. I just can't see the two as comparable.

secondly, there's the whole concept of why you support England. (again, not YOU you ). I'm guessing with music, you listen to lots of different music, you find some that talks directly to you, that moves you, that becomes your favourite because of how it makes you feel. Is that the same as the way you decided on England as the team to follow? I'd suggest it's not. There's a totally different process going on.

thirdly, there's a totally different process whereby a football teams success or lack of it affects your self image and worth, when compared to music. You invest in it in a different way, you project different things on to it, and get different things from it. Lots of people feel proud when 'their' team win, despite having absolutely no input into it. You might enjoy a gig/band/artist, but the same feeling of 'pride' is not really part of it.

As I said, I'm a massive football fan, I love the sport, don't get me wrong. I just can't find it in me any more to love a big club/the national team. It ain't mine anymore.

Going to a footy match is an ave £35 for 90 mins entertainment, if glasto was priced the same way it would cost nearly £3k to attend.
