Didn't they start with One Step Beyond? Is that not famous???

Back in the heyday of the TwoTone /Ska, Madness were always considered the fluffy pop kiddies band ,but all these years later. I knew they were would be stonking.

Very happy, given my above comments they still played tribute to their origins and included One Step Beyond, Buster and of course Madness

Having said that Baggy Trousers is classic and putting Lee Thompson back on the wires was absolutely hilarious

i like madness,i enjoyed them, but i feel for the first half of the set, i dont think they really kept anyone's attention. i think they saved all the songs till last. but at one point i was going to go and leave. i dont know if its the new stuff or whatever or maybe its me?

what did you think?

In front of us in the crowd for Madness, was a fantastic family. Dad was obviously a massive Madness fan, and his wife and his two young teenage daughters obviously knew all the songs -- perhaps it's something they'd put on in the car on family trips?

For the uptempo tracks, Dad would dash off and dance with strangers. Instead of being embarassed by their dad, the kids grinned and filmed him.

During "It Must Be Love", Dad gave the whole family a huge hug. It raised a fair old lump in my throat.

Fantastic set. Fantastic peoplewatching.

I had a few tears during "It Must Be Love". Always reminds me of my brother Sean (1960-1995, R.I.P) I loved it, enjoyed every single bit of it.

I missed it (bat for Lashes won the coin toss) According to the Beeb, setlist was:

1.One Step Beyond *

2.Embarrassment *

3.The Prince *

4.NW5

5.My Girl *

6.Dust Devil

7.Sun & The Rain *

8.Iron Shirt #

9.Clerkenwell Polka

10.Bed & Breakfast $

11.Shut Up *

12.Forever Young

13.House Of Fun *

14.Wings Of A Dove *

15.Baggy Trousers *

16.Our House *

17.It Must Be Love *

18.Madness #$

So that is 11 hits * (including Embarassment and My Girl, maybe two of their gratest songs ever), a couple of classic ska covers #, some old fan favourites that were not singles $ and the rest from the new album (which isn't bad, only one listen so far though!).

However, No Night boat to Cairo! :D How dare they not play that one!

I dunno, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good or even what I had expected. I was hoping for something different, funnily enough I was looking for a 'mad' set from them. Something different.

Overall it was an enjoyable set, but I was little disappointed.

I thought it was a pretty perfect set.

A good start, some new stuff in the middle (crowd did noticably quieten here) and a storming last 7!

I think given that we had to expect them to do some stuff off their new album they didn't do badly atall in arranging the set in such a way that it had a high feelgood factor.

House of Fun through to Nightboat to Cairo was a fantastic finish! I felt that everyone just went up and up and up!

On the other hand I thought The Specials were pretty flat. The songs stood up on their own so the crowd carried them, but they seemed a bit listless so I left their set a bit flat - but was soon perked up by Jamie T!

The posts about It Must Be Love remind me of a happening when I saw them at an open air gig about 5 years ago.

This huge bloke of about 45, 18 stone plus, skinhead (or bald!), braces, DMs, the works, spent the first half of the set jumping about like a loon with his mates, skanking for England. When It Must Be Love came on he went over to his girlfriend/wife, held her hand and then sung/mimed the song to her. Within a couple of lines the tears were literally rolling down his face as he struggled to carry on with the singing. He managed to make it to the end of the song and when I looked around, everyone who could see it appeared to be crying too. One of the sweetest things I've ever seen in my life.

I thought they were absolutely brilliant, and my second favourite act of the weekend (after Blur).

Think they should have been on before Blur though, as Nick Cave killed the up beat atmosphere created by Madness.
