Comparing positiion on different stages

Obviously as you move to a smaller stage a band moves higher up the bil on that stage but how does positioning on different stages compare. In my opinion on average it is

Headling nme = 4th headline on main stage

Headlining lock up = 3rd headline on nme or 6th headliner main

Headlining fr = 5th headline nme or 7th headliner main

Is this about right??

pretty much right, cept there's always execeptions, e.g Lostprophets as NME headliner could of played 2nd on main stage (headliner may have pushed it slightly..) and Faith No More probably could of headlined

I agree.

When I heard they were likely for Leeds/Reading, my first reaction was "Who?"

So I asked around my friends, from metal heads to indie kids, and nobody had any idea who they were.

I also listened to some songs, and couldn't say I'd ever heard any of them at all, not even the odd occasion on the radio or music channels.

what planet are you lot on??? i understand that they are not to everyones taste but ive got to wonder what kind of music fans/metal heads/indie kids youve been asking if 'nobody has any idea who they are'.i do admit they have got an 'alternative' sound and a lot of reading festival goers will hate them but let me assure u that they were a huge band before they split and this is a great booking for reading/leeds.

IM not dusputing they were a big band when they split but they were never big enough to headline reading/leeds festival in 2009. Compare them to rage, the ratm reunion had far more hype and interest than the faith no more reunion, killing in the name of is far better known than epic and ratm are more likley to be be played in an indi/rock club. It doesnt make fnm a small band just not one that would headline the festival. If they did it would probably be one of the smallest headline audience in the festivals history.

Just out of interest, how old are you and the people you've been asking?

I've only recently got into FNM, but have known the songs "Epic", "Easy" and "We Care A Lot" for years!

I'm 24, and most of my friends could name "epic" at least!

It seems the confusion is mainly frokm the under 20s

It is very hard to tell. Manics could have been second/ 3rd last year, where as the Cribs I doubt could have even pulled 4th on the Main Stage.

So you've given a good average.

Also I could see the FR headliner sometimes being 1st/ 2nd Main stage.

I don't know, surely FNM are maybe a slight bit less well-known than Pixies, Pearl Jam or Pumpkins?

That said, I reckon, with the exception of Pearl Jam, those bands could have headlined NME!

Just listened to Epic. I'm fairly sure I've never heard it before. The chorus sounds vaguely familiar but I think that's just because it sounds like another song. I can't remember the band but it was a bit of a comedy song about sex or something.

I would agree with that in my opinion though smashing pumpkins are at the same level as pearl jam in this county, it appeanred to me both drew similar size crowds at leeds which were both below an average headlining band at a festival. I would say both are however are of similar popularity in the uk meaning neither would headline the r1 tent.

As for pixies i would say they were slightly better known than fnm. I think they could headline nme tent but a few years ago i seemed to be really fashionable to liek the band which is why they headlined everywhere. I dont think faith no more are as fashioable as the pixies.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
