it wasn't just one meal was it?

nah, we used it over a few weeks. He'd moved out of his house to a new house with his new wife, but left some of his specially imported wines in the cupboard .... what were we gonna do with it?

While the supermarket wines are nowhere near the same quality, that crate we worked our way thru has given me a lifetime's liking for Hardy's reds. :) ... talking of which, Tesco has a Merlot of theirs on offer at the mo. :)

What the hell were you cooking that took 9 litres of wine? Did you have Keith Floyd round or something?

I can't remember all that it got used for, but I do remember that quite a few bottles got used for coq au van - mostly because the first one we cooked was so feckin' scrumptious that we had to keep making it again.

Revisiting an old theme of Prosecco I remember a couple of years ago Aldi or Lidl (I can't remember which) did small cans of Prosecco which were excellent to take to festivals which had a strict 'no glass' rule. But I haven't seen them for a long time.

So any suggestions for wine to take to fests with a 'no glass' rule?

We tend to settle for wine boxes but that doesn't give you fizz and I do like a bottle of fizz with fresh strawberries to mark our arrival.

Rioja is bland. Not a fan. The Tempranillo grape is dull and acidic. Spanish wine is at the bottom of my Old World list. I prefer Hungary as a nation as I know it makes at least one excellent Pinot Noir, which is more than can be said for Espania.

I can't really tell that much difference between a bottle of M&S Italian Table red and a bottle of Petrus. Probably because I smoke. Although there is a great Freakenomics podcast on it which goes to show it's mainly bunkum.

I had a nice Cotes de Gascogne from Tesco last night. I only bought it to make up a portabella mushroom and tarragon sauce with a steak for the kids tea, but ended up buying another bottle. My daughter is more of a Lambrini girl but see said it was "delicious". On offer at 4.99 and I would happily pay double for it :-)

Understand opinion.

I haven't enjoyed a Rioja above the distinction of average. I've had plenty. I don't turn my nose up, but I'm seldom if ever impressed. The main grape is not to my liking at all. I like Pinot, Malbec, Sangiovese, Cabernet and Primitivo primarily. I know my own taste. I don't know yours.

I'm just one man with an opinion. I'm hardly omniscient am I.

    • So we've signed a Horny Czech, and Bruno's turned up the training camp instead of doing Isak's nonsense.   Still not sure I believe Bruno's staying mind, but glad he's not doing the sh*t Arsenal are asking him to do to lower the price. If they want him they can stump up.   My suspicion is that whichever of Madrid/Man City don't start next season with Rodri will go for Bruno, and one of them will come in while Arsenal have f**ked about trying to get him cheap, which while I absolutely want to keep him, would still be good enough bants and a nice middle finger that I wouldn't mind it so much. I just wish we'd report Arsenal for tapping up.   If rumours are to be believed, we're after 2 more defensive signings, and an attacking player, on top of a replacement if Bruno leaves, having already signed a LW, 2 CMs, a GK, and some youth players. Huge churn, but apart from a couple of Bazou Toure's games for Ivory Coast at the world cup, I've not seen any of them play. Over 2 summers we've basically changed our entire team aside from the CBs.
    • I think the level of headliners Bloodstock get is varied    There's been bands who have gone on to play Download in quite a low spot like Meshuggah, Behemoth, Opeth etc.    Then they've had years like 2025 where you can argue that all three headliners are download main stage sub level    Knocked Loose right now i'd argue are 3rd down on main/opus headliner level while EC and FFDP are borderline main stage sub
