Though I doubt any wine buff will ever admit it, the hatred of Merlot is down to a character in "Sideways" (who loved Pinot Noir) saying "I'm not drinking a f**king Merlot!" A good Merlot can be just as good as a Pinot Noir (or better than a bad one)

The stats in the US in particular after that film were funny. Like Merlot dropped 70% in sales and Pinot went up 300%. Shows what people know.
