Especially like the last line of the review:

a Doves show is an homage to their gorgeously evocative songwriting and unusually 3-D, genre-straddling instrumental and arrangement sensibilities.

When do you reckon you'd have to get in the JP tent to have a chance of seeing them? the one band i really want to see over the weekend and i really don't want to miss out..... don't want to spend all Friday in there either just to get a good spot! stressful.

do you reckon they'll play on either of the main stages as well?

If Emily were to put The Black Eyed Peas on before The Doves - it'll empty the tent! Listening to their set would be a heavy price to pay but you'd be guaranteed a good spot.

im seriously gutted about the clash with Neil Young.

My favourite artist of all time clashes with my Favourite modern day band!

Seen Doves before but never Neil so easy choice! Hopefully catch Doves again sometime soon!

still in 2 minds about doves because of it - because ive seen them twice this year, and if i cant shift my latitude tickets will catch them there, but the thought of missing doves at the big G is nearly unthinkable

it will also depend on the agreement me and the missis have got this year - the last few times ive been a bit over obsessed with seeing as many of the acts i 'want' to see culminating in not seeing too much of the fringe stuff

this year we have an agreement that once the line-ups out, we will dispassionatly discuss the acts and come up with 9 acts between us that are 'unmissable' and the rest we will just float about

currently we have doves, white lies, spinal tap, the specials & the easy star all stars as unmissables

so still see myself seeing em, simply because i cant see anybody else breaking into the 'unmissable' catagory

i with you there

but i cant see the 'new' specials getting the sunset spot. i think we'll both be fine on that front. i think they will be on 3rd from the top so plenty of time for a wander over to the jp!!

Doves continue to rock em on their North American tour - from the Vancouver gig:

Doves create instant classics with new material

By Annette Spreeuw

When a band tours, it's going to mean different things to different people. Some of us only show up to hear the hits, and then there are those freaks who actually want to hear the new material the guys on-stage are invariably there to plug.

I always thought that by and large I fell into the former category, but seeing Doves at the Commodore on Thursday, May 21 was a revelation: not only do I really like the new material, but I was also clamouring to hear more of it.

Okay, the vodka shots may have helped my enthusiasm, but whatever the reason, I couldn't help but dance along, grinning like an idiot all the while, to classics both established and in the making.

Since this was my first chance to experience the boys live, it was all new and shiny to me, so I can only assume they left “Catch the Sun” off the set list for a good reason—in fact, 2000's Lost Souls was largely ignored—but among the new material was a reliable sprinkling of the old barnburners like "Black and White Town" and the most appropriately monikered "Pounding". Doves' signature sound has always had that unique ability to sound both melancholic and uplifting at the same time, and on this particular night the sound mix at the Commodore brought out the best of both—the soaring guitars on "Words" and new favourite "Kingdom of Rust" sounded good enough to lift me straight up to a heaven I don't believe in.

Overall, the boys in the band were looking pretty pleased to be there, giving the crowd a relaxed, happy performance that rocked in all the right places. I feel damn confident in declaring that if you weren't a rabid Doves fan at the start of the show, you certainly had a burning need to hit the merch table by the time the band returned for its encore. In particular, the new album Kingdom of Rust, which made up the majority of the show, plays especially well live, which bodes well for future tours when tracks like "10:03" and "The Greatest Denier" should be part of the permanent roster.

i've just been the shops to buy some special protective pants to wear for doves because they will play spaceface at roughly 00.23am saturday and the crowd will go mental in the JP tent while people will be getting a bit bored watching the 34th minute of neil young's guitar solo then when its finished i will buy a baguette, cider and go to trash city for a few hours

:)

    • I decided to goto bed early for the Aussie game rather than stay up for Scotland. I don't regret my decision, I also love the complete over reaction during the world cup when a player has 1 good game, that Watford winger is now everyones dream signing. Its also funny when clubs get into the hype and end up overpaying for someone who then does nothing in the prem.

    • I read the Kerrang review and they didn’t seem overly positive. The definition of a 6 out of 10.
    • Interesting the stat guys say 3 points and -3 goal difference is where it gets to 50/50 territory in terms of going to the last 32. If Scotland lose their last 2 at best they are on -1, play like they did yesterday and they could take a heavy loss.   However thinking about it positively get 4 points from the last 2 games and the group is won! Have heard a few saying Scotland should just park the bus next 2 games, but not sure they have the players to do it. From my perspective they could really do with a decent defensive midfielder to add balance, but not sure if they have one in the squad. They also need significantly more from Mctominay who I thought was poor, but understand he has been unwell.
