From the Net Weather blog. Main point today is "an unsettled period seems very likely, with some rain seeming probable during the festival period"

"Let's start as usual by looking at the GFS operational chart, and hope that the recent trend to an unsettled festival is curtailed.

The first chart for Wednesday shows weak low pressure across the UK, with a decaying weather front giving rain for Glastonbury for much of the day, Thursday shows high pressure building out in the Atlantic but with a developing low-pressure system which means a dry Thursday but a very wet Friday morning, as this rainfall projection shows.

The combined pressure rainfall chart below shows the low pressure on top of the southern half of the UK on Friday giving heavy rain, which lasts for much of the day. As High pressure attempts to nudge in for Saturday, the low pressure and associated rainfall moves into the continent, so drier weather would be likely.

High pressure pushes in for Sunday, but still with not that much sunny weather.

So again the operational chart is not brilliant, what do the ensembles have to day. There does look to a slight improvement from yesterday with some ensembles going for a pressure rise from around the 21st June ((Thursday) but the average remains below the significant 1020mb level, but there does seem to be a steady rise as we move towards the end of the Festival period.

Again from this; most of the ensemble members go for some rainfall over the festival period.

The run of ensembles shows the general pattern is fairly secure but even slight changes can be a significant weather difference.

The ECM goes for an unsettled Wednesday and Thursday, a transitional Friday before the High Pressure nudges back in for the Saturday.

So, quite a lot of charts today, what is the summary, an unsettled period seems very likely, with some rain seeming probable during the festival period, the question at his stage, how unsettled and how much rain. At this stage most of the unsettled weather and rain may be concentrated at the start of the festival, with a slight improvement towards the end. "

We won't see anything like '98 again, the drainage has been improved so much (witness 2005 when the average rainfall for June fell Friday morning and the site was pretty much dried out by Saturday night).

Even the worst forecasts aren't that bad. For an absolute quagmire, you need solid heavy rain for about a week beforehand, everyone to turn up and churn it up, then constant heavy rain for the duration of the festival for water to sit on top.

The forecasts I have seen for the next week say showers. We're hardly in Somme territory and all we need is for the ground to be fairly solid and we can all cope with the occasional showers over the weekend!

If not, take a chair and some wellies! These two things made Royksopp and FB Slim enjoyable for me last time as they made the river running across the Other Stage an irrelevance!

So as far as I can see nothing is certain (forecast still too far off) but virtually every forecast suggests we'll start the fest off (at least) with a bit of a mudbath.

But at least all forecasts seem to agree it will be warm (unlike 98) and we'll be at Glasto and it may well dry up for the weekend.

So .... :):P:(:):):););):(

Bit of a bastard to miss solstice sunrise though (if the forecasts come to pass)

this thread is a good tonic- it's made me resign myself to the fact that it'll be wet and muddy....i will prepare adequately and enjoy myself whatever...if it takes hours to walk from one side of the site to the other because of the mud, then i won't walk from one side of the site to the other

and............if it isn't a quagmire- what a bonus :)

a total pointless post but it better not f*cking be pissing down again, it rained in 2004 & 2005 last year i went to V which was shit (apart from faithless) and it also rained, i swore i was going to bencassim this year because i couldn't handle not being able to hit down anywhere, but the pull of pilton was too strong again. so if it rains again someone is getting a very stern letter of complaint.

Outlook for Days 6 - 10 (Tuesday 19/06/07 to Saturday 23/06/07)

It is expected to remain unsettled with further rain or showers, still with the risk of some heavy and perhaps thundery rain at times. Confidence is MEDIUM for a continuation of the unsettled spell.

This is taken from my works weather forecast for SW England - it needs to be as accurate as possible for rainfall amounts, and comes directly from the Met Office in Exeter !!!!

:):P:(:):)

If I'm resigned to the fact it will rain, it won't be as bad as 2005.

The thing that annoyed me was the optimism that the SCORCHING hot Thursday gave me.

But, I say it again, - NO RAIN.

If it must, I want time to mourn the lack of sun so I'm geared up for miserable weather and will therefore mentally prepare myself to be cheery by drinking far more beer than usual.

Could you give a direct link to the Glastonbury forecast on that site please? The nearest I can get is Bristol on the 'cities' side of the search (where prospects look fairly positive, but chilly). But entering the postcode in the left hand box doesn't seem to work.

That Netweather blog (quoted by level earlier, and linked to somewhere on page 42) seems to be updated daily around 11 pm. Their models run ahead of what is shown on most other forecasts. Tonight's and tomorrow's updates could prove crucial. I've more or less decided that the very last chance of any significant turn, or any turn, for the better in these forecasts is Saturday, if rain is still strongly predicted by the end of Sunday, we've probably had it.

For those who understandably!! don't like the heavy technicality of that blog, the week ahead's forecast on Countryfile, BBC1, Sunday 17th, about half way through the programme, will be important.

Countryfile usually starts 11:30 am going up to midday, but make sure to check the time.

Whatever happens, looks like it's going to be quite chilly. Bring layers as well as waterproofs!
