PEARL JAM

Yep...it's another classic from the masters that are Pearl Jam.

Had nothing but 'No Code' on the go today...is an excellent album and criminally underrated.

'In My Tree', 'Present Tense', 'Off He Goes', 'Around The Bend', 'Habit', 'Red Mosquito', 'Lukin', 'Hail, Hail' and plenty more besides...how can that not make a fantastic album?!

I've gone for a little bit of this:

Plaque on the wall says that no ones slept here

Its rare to come upon a bridge that has not been around

Or been stepped on

Whatever the notions, we laced in our prayers

The man upstairs is used to all of this *f**king* noise

Im through with screaming

And echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes

Like echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes

Were faithful, we all believe, we all believe it

And echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes

Were faithful, we all believe, we all believe it

So faithful, we all believe, we all believe it

M.y.t.h. is

Belief in the game controls that keeps us in a box of fear

We never listen

Voice inside so drowned out

Drowned you are, you are, you are a furry thing

And everything is you

Me you, you me, its all related

Whats a boy to do?

Just be darling and I will be too

Faithful to you

Faithful

He lacks something vocally on that album I feel, and its a tad tense. The songs I've highlighted are great, but on listening to the album as a whole it sounds like its lost; a further exploration into some of the wacko ideas from Vitalogy, perhaps. I think 'Yield' is the antithesis of 'No Code', they dispell some demons on that album, re-focus, and get back on track - its very polished and shiney.

It's strange how the perspectives of their albums change so much from time to time. A sign of excellence if ever there was one, I reckon. 'No Code' will probably be my favourite next week. Such is Pearl Jam.

EDIT: Oh, and if 'Habit' isn't a seminal; grunge defining song then I trully don't know what grunge is. And if I don't know what grunge is, then I'll eat my hat and the hat of every man in this room.

'Habit' certainly is a grunge-defining song. Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Layne Stayley and so on...these people died from their habit, yes...before and after that song was written. So many of Pearl Jam's peers got mixed up and messed up with drugs (heroin in particular) and this song certainly does define that facet of grunge.

And thats without mentioning the absolute no non-sense pre-90's hardcore grunge sound of the song. It's a fitting ode in every way. Pearl Jam are as about as 'convincingly' diverse a rock band as you can get.

Note: 'Convincingly', to any of you prog rock fans!

Interestingly enough, I've pinpointed that part of this song aswell, and I sub-consciously compare it to Soundgardens 'Like Suicide. In particular, the high pitched re-interpretation and re-emphasis of the first bridge that morphes from a rather sweet sounding 'with eyes of blood and bitter blue' to a seering, painful:

'With an ounce of pain, I yield a ton of rage' - Special!

EDIT: Incidentally, my favourite solo of all time. Cornell's cry of 'I feel', setting the stage no end.

As Soundgarden were conceived so fittingly in the 80's, I will let that statement fly.

    • I mean I think unless you are camped in a particular bit which apparently you just get no sleep i feel it would be better setup to travel in from a hotel each day and back. Ah there is so many downfalls to it for me, I think the Download main stage area is so much better and that's coming from me. If you're camped in green to go round all the time and out for lidl and even water is stupid!
    • Did you camp or go for a hotel? I looked into it briefly and seems easy enough to get back to Nuremberg.
    • Been last time in 2018 when the festival was happening in parque Bela vista. ls the new location good for such a big festival? What's the temperature in the evening near Tejo? Should we bring a raincoat or a jacket?
