PEARL JAM

yeah i agree some of vedder's lyrics seem contrived. Overall I'd say he's a good lyricist though, with flashes of brilliance. But I'm not too fussed about lyrics.

Two words.

'Yellow Ledbetter'

pinback - sorry for calling you a bumnugget. I was drunk and it was insensitive of me.

I don't see how Vedder's lyrics are ever contrived myself. Perhaps you are considering lyrics written by other band members? Still, I do not find those contrived either. But, it's down to the person listening at the end of the day.

I really enjoy Pearl Jam's lyrical content, it's often thought-provoking and written about very interesting subjects from a unique perspective.

'Present Tense' is a particularly inspiring number that really does preach that dwelling on the past is unhealthy for the mind.

Alright is not good enough.

I don't, nor have I ever, settled for mediocrity.

Palming off something average as good should be attacked as it is the height of pretension and gets in the way of what is good.

Surely some of the Pearl Jam releases after Vs have been decidedly mediocre? I think so, but clearly you don't, once again proving the theory that your argument is based purely on taste.

I'm not a Franz Ferdinand fan, as I've said before, but your constant slating of one band while so aggressively trumpeting another is so hypocritical it's startling...

 I just think it's harsh to defend Pearl Jam for about 300 pages, then, when someone suggests another band, you can simply dismiss them with "they're shite, Pearl Jam aren't"! Surely, by your own rules of engagement, that's not allowed!

I do find it curious that people come into this forum as non-Pearl Jam fans and just try to argue with us.

Character assassinations aimed in our directions are all too often hypocritical.

I'd like to put attitudes down to passion for music. I'd like to...

I haven't said that though.

I said that to Olivavu because like me, he is in the know, so there's no need to pussy foot around the subject. However, if someone else was to suggest otherwise then I'd hear them or simply make my point and step aside as I often do with Dr. Dre Nora.

I feel like I'm being interogated by the hypocrisy police. ;)

I apologise, I'm certainly not trying to be the hypocrisy oinks!

As for the taste defence, indeed, musical debates are about taste. Why then, do you insist on defending your own taste so vehemently and on numerous occasions, by attacking someone else's?

You can't slate someone for what they like in one breath and then turn around and say "yeah, but it's all about taste...". If it is, then get over the fact some people don't think the sun shines from Eddie Vedder et al's backsides, and move on!

Yeah that's kind of what people mean.....it's very preachy. Whereas Cobain just wrote the first thing that came in to his head, you can imagine Vedder sitting there for hours, trying to produce something profound all the time and not letting it just spill from the gut.

Although there are plenty of ambiguities, compared to other artists he's very preachy....often telling the lister exactly the way it is, trying to give you answers and something definite to believe in, instead of asking questions of the listener (which imo is true genius).

I love Pearl Jam. But I try to take an objective view on them and I can understand why some people don't like them.

Personally, I attack the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Maximo Park etc because I see little or no depth musically or lyrically in any of them. If people want to listen to them, then that is obviously their choice, but I will debate it when people say they are a more inspiring set of bands than Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Tool or Jeff Buckley (as has been the instance on here) because I find that ridiculous personally.

My main issue with music today is that minimal has any depth or longivity. Those of us that appreciate music with these traits are being starved in this decade. It's disappointing.

I'm afraid Eddie Vedder is one hell of an instinctive lyricist mate.

He wrote the lyrics to the first four Pearl Jam tracks overnight and came up with the lyrics to the rest of 'Ten' in under a week.

And what is so wrong with precision anyway?

Cobain isn't a patch on Vedder at the end of the day either...

Ah there is so many downfalls to it for me, I think the Download main stage area is so much better and that's coming from me. If you're camped in green to go round all the time and out for lidl and even water is stupid!
