Just out of curiosity and im positive you will see this message cultseeker due to the thread this is in. You joined this forum 62 days ago, have now posted nearing on 2500 posts. thats an average of 40+ a day. I was just curious as to what the story is? Nothing better to do or does this site meet with ego needs, i.e using specialist language when all around seem very casual and perhaps seeming not on an intellectual standard as yourself. Maybe it is the enjoyable conversation you can strike with other forum users.... although that again seems quite flawed when most of your threads are based on "knocking" other peoples views and opinions and seeing your own as not only right but the only view worth having. I apologise if i offend with this post but i like satisfying my curiosity and i just wonder what it is about this forum that makes u tick so much.

As far as the research I have been able to gather, a t**t.

Don't mark me down as a tabloid jounalist please. It offends my sensibilities somewhat - I've always steered clear of becoming that, often to my detriment.

Telling a story in 3,000 words to be read by a university lecturer is easy - writing the same story in a way that's understood by an eight year-old, in 250 words, now that takes some skill...

Was it Mark Twain who said "a journalist is an out-of-work reporter"? I think that rings true and should be taken on board by a lot of broadsheet writers who seem to forget that their job is to write clearly, in an easy-to-understand way.

But that's a whole other debate...

A journalist is someone who documents the truth. A reporter is someone who reports on breaking topical incidents with a passing human interest, for the purpose of cash, at the expense of integrity.

That is bollocks. So a reporter documenting war/famine/oppression/murder by relaying what he is seeing with his own eyes, possibly in some danger, has compromised his integrity?

What a load of shite.

You have no idea whether a reporter works "for the purpose of cash", or writes about what matters to them and makes a difference to people!

I'm a reporter, therefore I have no integrity?

f**k off.

And reporters (who work for the sole purpose of cash) get paid fook all!

*shakes head*

Rather harsh.

A reporter must report. He/she must base this report on the sensibilities of the consumer paying him (society), otherwise he would have no means by which, to report.

A journalist must journal. He has no target audience other than the three ideals of objective jounalism which is something like; Does it inform I, the author, you, the reader and address this, the matter. It is then for people/ history whatever really, to purchase (both in money and in merit).

Two very different things.

Speaking from experience, I find the field of pure journalism to be quite corrupt and immoral, hence the distinction between reporter and journalist (aimed at the job, not the person of course).

On Topic: Pearl Jam rock! ;)

I was looking at the terms quite literally.

To 'journal' means to document facts.

To 'report' means to relay a story.

I was merely drawing comparison and difference of the consequences of these two mission statements.

And I was not implying that you had no integrity, you inferred that because you identified with the metaphoric 'reporter' I referred to.

No offence bud, I wasn't fishing for an argument or trying to cause offence.

Thats fine to ask. I'm not offended and am quite happy to correct your rather poor perception of me in any way I can.

Story: I came to this site to check out some peoples views on music (especially as Pearl Jam were playing this year). I've written for many similar sites, however, I have never felt a desire to write on their boards. Not the case here as your post bares testimony.

Lots of posts: I mainly write in the discussion forum, where there are alot of elaborate points of view up for discussion. That generally means alot of posts in a very little space of time.

Specialist language: I speak my words, I'm sorry if they don't fit into a comfortable casual remit. Surely a 'casual language' would be the specialist language rather than the use of a correct and free articulation of words? Just a thought. In essence, I try to be as clear as possible, thats all.

Knocking others views: I simply don't do this. I question for sure, but seldom, if ever, do I attack.

My motive: I enjoy sharing music, wisdom and ideas. I get that from discussion and have recieved some very helpful pointers from some people on this forum, ranging from ideas to music that I had overlooked.

What gives me my time: After years of hard work and study, I now work from home and write for a living. Sometimes I can make my weeks wage in a morning, sometimes I can go without work for weeks - in that spare time I'd rather do this than watch 2 episodes of Neighbours a day. It's far more productive, I feel.

I hope that goes someway to answering your questions and I'm sorry if you think I'm, well, whatever bad it is that you may think I am.

Peace, hope and charity brothers and sisters.

On a side not i will actually thank all the grunge listeners on these forums that seem to have progressed my music taste into a new era. Other than nirvana i listened to no grunge as a young teenager as i was far more into fast flowing punk/rock music that made you wanna have a good time. Since starting this forum ive listened to so much more grunge and been really surprised the way iv taken to love it. Chris cornell especially stands out as a favourite, although i still don't really understand the hype over blackhole sun. there are so many other soundgarden songs i prefer. Maybe that song will hit me one day with age!

Jan at work, a 50 year old Scottish woman, made me laugh today. We had the radio on and Coldplay came on and she said "I don't see why there's so much made of this lot...they're so bland. Their music is boring, nothing happens...he just whines a lot. He's stuck up his own backside that one."

Well done Jan!

    • No worries, it's a perfectly fair question to ask. I would expect people to be talking at the back & near the bars & that is where I would want them to be talking. If your group are enjoying yourselves & the music & briefly chatting to say how much you are loving a certain song etc, you would be an ideal group to stand behind.   My issue is with people having full blown conversations (usually unrelated what is on the stage) whilst being surrounded by people who are trying to listen to the music. This was happening in the middle and towards the front of all stages, & so you have limited options to move around & you may have spent 20 minutes waiting for the band trying to get the closest position that you can. If there's a group of 8 people, there may be 2 or 3 that like the band & the rest will start talking if the music isn't their thing. This may be the norm now for festivals, and if it is, that's ok & I will focus on a band's own gigs & UK based new music festivals.    I'm also not including consequences of my own decision making. I saw Geese on Wednesday so went to Occident after Men I Trust finished so it was understandable there would be chatting that far back. Similarly, getting to The XX after Olivia Rodrigo along with most of the site, I knew my chance of a good spot & a chat-free zone had gone so that was completely reasonable.   PS. I went to Bilbao BBK in 2023 & 2025 & enjoyed it. For Pulp & Kylie in 2025, I got a position early & was surrounded by a respectful & fun crowd for both. The UK non-headlining bands tend to go on the undercover 3rd stage, & most people like to congregate outside so you can usually get close to the front of that stage.
    • Interview on 6 music earlier, was going to get the album to have a listen, but comes out the day they play the festival
