This is because you are the most narrow minded music appreciater there ever was.

While im no massive coldplay fan i do have the intelligence to realise that a band producing the sort of music they do will have an impact upon a chosen audience. It so happens that chosen audience covers a large proportion of the world and has thus sprialled coldplay into the realms of the 'mainstream'. As a band they have written some simply incredibly moving songs which have the power to hit people very emotionally.

While this music triggers zero responce within your mind and body olivavu i have absolutely no doubt in me that this music does trigger responces in others and to say that you cannot see why this is so is simply blind.

You have taken your distate for coldplay and the fact they are hugely popular and turned it into hate. The reasons for this are your own but may i make a suggestion to you. Remember...

life is too short!

right. this is really bugging me now.

I feel i really should like Pearl Jam. I mean, I love almost all of the other huge American early nineties rock bands - Nirvana, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, RATM, R.E.M, Sonic Youth etc..

Yet no matter how much i try or how often i listen to Pearl Jam (well Ten tbh, i don't own any of their other albums) - it doesn't grab me. Not one song stands out from another, i don't like the vocals :P , and it all seems a bit generic and repetitive. All i seem to hear is a band that sounds like Creed. :(;) .

Please tell me where i'm going wrong and what i should listen to - is there a better starting place than ten?

*awaits barrage of flames* :D

This is my point, coldplay clearly have songs that will hit people powerfuly and provoke emotion, to say this is not true is sheer pigheadedness. Im not asking you to like them, its fair enough to dislike any band but to label their type of music total shit due to your dislike just degrades any future opinion you have.

But why respect something that is standard. Surely standards should be attacked. It's all part of rock and roll. You accept things as they are and nothing will progress. I think Olivavu and I (seeing as we get lumped together) are of the opinion that Coldplay and the likes are stifling the progress of rock music, hence the frustration when bands like this are revered and falsely attributed credit, and the subsequent angry criticisms and outbursts that follow.

You don't have to agree, I'm just trying to give you some perspective.

Long live criticism, it's the height of freedom of speech and the fuel of all progress.

I'm not the biggest Pearl Jam fan but looking forward to seeing them at Leeds so have been checking out some of their stuff.

I picked up 'Binaural' in a sale last weekend, just had a quick look through this thread (wow, 55 pages) and it seems not to be the most popular album. I actually like it more than the other 2 albums I've got by them (can you guess what they are, its the obvious two...)

Interested to hear any more thoughts on the album, though I know it has been discussed already (someone said something about hoovering to it...)

But when the criticism is "f**k them. I despise the c**ts", I don't think it is the 'height of freedom of speech' or the 'fuel of all progress'. It ain't angry criticism either, it's just being a potty-mouth.

And what do PJ contribute to the 'progress' of rock music? Not a lot to my ears, they sound retro to me. Coldplay aren't as progressive as, say, Kraftwerk, New Order, Radiohead - but i don't think their sound is all that regressive either.

Get a grip. That's the frustration I'm talking about, as well you know.

New Order.

Here's a few pointers, just in answer to the emerging PJ vs Coldplay thing;

Who on this planet has a voice like Vedders? The bloke from Creed... And live, the bloke from Gomez!

Who plays (or has ever played) riffs like Gossard and Ament? The bloke they nicked them off - Jimmy Page.

Whose music perfectly represents the subject matter? Coldplay or Pearl Jam? Coldplay portray what they're saying pretty well, usually moping loss or something, as do Pearl Jam with whatever they're getting out there.

Whose music has a vast diversity of subject matter and soundscope? When have Pearl Jam used string and piano arrangements quite as effectively as Coldplay? I would say never. And when have Coldplay used distorted guitars as effectively as Pearl Jam? Again, never. So that's down to opinion...

Who has the most definitive sound? Tough one. I know when something's Coldplay and I know when something's Pearl Jam.

New Order. :(

Does the laughing smiley indicate that you don't think New Order were innovative and Pearl Jam are? In which case, may I return the gesture thricefold :D:blink:;)

Chad Kroeger

Who plays (or has ever played) riffs like Gossard and Ament?

That's only relevent if you think the riffs are good to listen to

Whose music perfectly represents the subject matter? Coldplay or Pearl Jam?

Another one of your Tony Lemezma questions :) . They both represent each bands subject matter in their individual ways I suppose, but I wouldn't say either were 'perfect'.

Whose music has a vast diversity of subject matter and soundscope?

Never heard the word soundscope before, did you make it up or does it mean the same as scope? PJ probably tackle more subject matters (Coldplay don't really do subjects as such, beyond love), but I think Coldplay's music has more scope.

Who has the most definitive sound?

I don't know. I find Chris Martin's voice quite recognisable, but there are a lot of bands on their coattails with a similar sound. Eddie Vedder's voice is quite recognisable too. I'll call that one a draw

I think New Order were ground-breaking, electronica in rock was new stuff man!

Let's be prefectly honest about it - good though pearl Jam are, they have done very little to revolutionise rock music have they?

Pearl Jam rock like a motherf**ker, and brim with talent of both tool and idea.

Coldplay drone on like a bunch of pretentious dweebs with nothing exciting or important to say, ever.

but if you wish to argue that point - Coldplay have publicly backed numerous campaigns - including Oxfam's Ever Felt Dumped On?, Fair Trade Campaign, Live 8, and pledged to replenish forests used to produce their album inlays and the like.

    • A question has crossed my (questionable) mind;   Has the size of the Green Fields remained the same as other areas have expanded / been added on to, since say, 2014 (the last time that I attended)? Are they 'lost' within, or well attended?    That's actually two questions. The second one just slipped in at the end by taking advantage of my lack of means to stop it.
    • I'd say the same about Kylie.    Annie would be awesome, Duran not so much, and on the issue of them wanting a beanie slot, that probably rules out a fair few others who I think would fit the bill very well... and are legitimately more entitled to a headline, and/or too expensive.   Was just about to suggest Chaka Khan, but see @Gnomicide has beat me to it!    What about someone like Bryan Ferry?
    • It's certainly gone more that way, but then they went completely in the opposite direction and had Cat Stevens.
    • Chaka can, or Chaka can't?
