Sziget 2025

From the top of my head, the best substitute for Kneecap would be Soft Play. They are free on that date, clearly up for flying back and forth in Europe (they play in Bristol on the 1st, Poland on the 3rd, Romania on the 8th, London on the 9th, then they are free until a gig in Portugal on the 13th), and these days they stand for similar values as Kneecap, possibly have a similar audience. I don't think they're expensive either, on their peak they've headlined a cheap, small festival here in Hungary (Bánkitó).

I'd also love bby as a substitute for Ecca Vandal, they're playing at Pukkelpop as well, probably available, similar sized band, I was surprised they're not doing Sziget in the first place.

Hungarian rapper Sisi says she's going to play some Kneecap at Sziget, and all of her other gigs this year.

Her shows are always fun by the way, I can only recommend.

She's on at 18:00 on Friday at Dropyard.

Where can I find this news?

I really hope that Sziget take this opportunity to stick two fingers up at the Hungarian Govt and get a decent name as a replacement and not just shuffle things around.

If they shuffle things around, punters will be pissed off at Sziget for not getting a decent replacement, which will please the Govt no end. If they replace with, for example, Fontaines (who are much bigger now than they were last year) it will stop the Govt boasting about what they did.

Quite a few acts around that could work as a replacement.

Just on a quick scout at those acts at Pukkelpop, Oya, Way Out West etc:

Lola Young

VIagra Boys

Bicep

Fontaines DC

Idles

Wet 'f**kin' Leg

Sure there'll be many more too. It's a Monday night, so pretty much every act in Europe should be available 🤣

Were these solo shows or festivals?

Both. She cancelled all her solo shows a few weeks ago (including Prague or Munich - 12+13/8) but now she was also removed from Grape festival lineup and replaced by Balu Brigada.

The Kooks are at Grape on 9th and Pukkelpop on 15th. I reckon they'd go down well as a replacement.

That list looks decent as f**k, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up. I expect they will shuffle thing around or pull in a Hungarian act.

I might be wrong, but I suspect having a decent-sized act on in Revolut at 10:45pm helps the organisers to get their event plan signed off by the relevant authorities. It plays a part in dispersing punters after the mainstage headliner finishes, to prevent any similar crushing experienced after Ed Sheeran's set when tens of thousands all headed out of the same exit at the same time.

Like I say, I might be wrong, but I suspect the organisers might be obliged to provide a similarly popular act. Especially as they have two-and-a-half weeks to sort.

While I’m not sure local authorities care about the size of any given act, crowd management wise what you saying makes sense. On that note, pulling in a decent sized Hungarian act would be able stop the mass migration of daily ticket holders after Chapell Roan. Really looking forward to see what Sziget has up their sleeves. Edit: I’m pretty sure they had developed a plan for a similar situation after all the drama started a few weeks ago. Do we know if any of the above has the same management as Kneecap? Back when Amy Winehouse died, they booked 30stm instead of her and Gerendai said that in similar situations the act’s management tries to offer similar sized bands/acts from their own portfolio.

Funnily enough, I was just going to say that The Wombats are playing Boardmasters on Friday (a Superstruct event) and then in Netherlands on Saturday. Free then until 22nd. Would be a good fit.

Initially there were two bands I missed from festival lineups I go this years. Wombats and Pulp. Pulp was sorted with Patchwork, would be perfect if I could remove The Wombats from my bucket list finally.

But I’m still 90% sure it’s going to be a Hungarian act.

Like I said in my post yesterday, I think this would be a really bad move by Sziget. Lots of people (especially the Irish contingent) very pissed off with Govt for what they've done.

If Sziget replace with a decent act, their love of Sziget will grow and their contempt for Hungarian Govt will remain. If they are replaced with an act they've never heard of then their annoyance at the Govt might shift to Sziget organisers.

Hopefully they go for something a bit fresher and less bland, than the kooks or the wombats.

Agree, they're both very 'indie landfill' but I saw Wombats at a festival a couple of years ago and they really whipped the crowd into a frenzy. It was an exceptional gig (even if the music wasn't actually that great 🤣)

Would be very humorous booking the kooks, as a protest booking for banning kneecap. I highly doubt it will be a traditional guitar band.

I think they are lucky its a Monday, so many choices if they want to replace(not guaranteed). Especially with the likes of way out west, oya, pukkelpop.

    • I mean I think unless you are camped in a particular bit which apparently you just get no sleep i feel it would be better setup to travel in from a hotel each day and back. Ah there is so many downfalls to it for me, I think the Download main stage area is so much better and that's coming from me. If you're camped in green to go round all the time and out for lidl and even water is stupid!
    • Did you camp or go for a hotel? I looked into it briefly and seems easy enough to get back to Nuremberg.
