Bristol was the only city in 2012 that voted for a mayor. We had a local independent who was popular, then Marvin Rees won and was so corrupt that Bristol voted to get rid of the position - having just had the WECA mayor position put in place as well.

There's no doubt he did the work, but the money dumped into Manchester for him to achieve that was huge - the most of any infrastructure project outside London ever. Did that need a mayor, or just the money?

Maybe you need a groovy mayor who can get you the money.

 

Anyway, looks like mayors going to get a whole load of fiscal devolution and greater powers...so best everyone gets one, a decent one, and get a load of Madchesterism.

We'll see. Bristol and Leeds are both massively overdue big public transport investment - 2 of the cities with the worst transport infrastructure per capita in Western Europe. If this works to help support investment projects great and fair play to Burnham.
