Most big changes in society weren't achieved by disconnected rationalism - suffragettes, racial segregation and civil rights etc- raging against injustice is an important element of political change, something I think remainers were a bit late in realising which is why brexiteers ran rings around them. Sure it can be distressing especially when it brings up personal stuff or experiences of being in abusive households or situations, but it's part of life and not always a bad thing.

The problem with politeness is you can end up with passive aggressive political acts whereby horrific policies are carried out under the guise of well mannered 'respectability.

I don't think comparing membership or not to the EU to the fight for entire groups of people to get votes or basic rights is quite the same thing though. Brexit succeeded because there was no passion in the remain argument and they managed to sell the problems with the UK being the fault of Europe rather than the fault of government. Nobody on either side wanted that fact out there so it was a lie that was allowed to gain traction. I'm all for civil disobedience and protest. I just think people who are dogmatic tend to put more people off than they will ever attract.

I personally think I have had more success changing the minds of people by engaging with them than screaming into the void but if you can genuinely say you've managed to change people's mind by screaming at them and telling them they are stupid then keep it up. In the run up to the referendum I know I managed to convince 3 people who were on the fence to vote remain by explaining a bit more how the EU works, talking down some of the lies they had heard. The problem is assuming that there are just  sides those who are really passionately pro-brexit and those who are really passionately remain. There are actually huge swathes of people somewhere in the middle who were floundering in either direction. You are unlikely to change the minds of anybody who is an absolute die hard of any description but elections and referendums are often won on those floating voters who could go either way.
