Was really annoyed by their absense this year, and MTAOD was my second favourite album of 2014 (after Are We There), and I'm not in the country for their fucking London show. A new LP but no shows = sad sad Tuna. Report back FF, I'm waiting for the physical release methinks.

They're doing the ATP in November so when that gets cancelled you might get another London show!

The new Dr Dre album is so much better than I could have ever hoped it would be.

 

Except for Eminem's verse. Eminem needs to get in the sea already.

Yep thought it was amazing. Loved it and I even went in with high expectations. All his guests are in top form (even Eminem was at his best but as usual a horrible 'joke' puts a black mark next to his name) and Dre still has it, particularly on his one track he goes alone on to close the album and pretty much provide closure to his career and probably that whole era. The whole thing is diverse; emotional, topical and gangster tracks filed alongside each other and it still manages to be solid throughout. Really stunning stuff.

I'd agree with pretty much all of that. It feels like such a complete final statement. Dre's real talent has always been in his choice of collaborators, so to have him playing ringmaster to at least three generations of hip-hop talent is a perfect way to bow out. And it also means that it would have been equally weird to not have Eminem on the album.

 

But I still think his presence on Medicine Man is the one false step. It's not just that awful rape gag, although that's inexcusable. It's also that the whole album seems so totally and consistently bound up with hip-hop's roots in black urban communities that when Eminem jumps up doing his shtick it really jars for me and takes me out of the overall flow. He's like the kid who can't believe he's been invited to the cool party so overcompensates by being as loud and obnoxious as possible.

 

But then Dre has a large black mark next to his name re. violence towards women, so maybe it's symbolically fitting to have that black mark on the album, even if it's unintentional.

Yeah that's an excellent point. Though I do feel like, despite being out of place, Eminem's verse could have been one where people go "wow he really proves what he can do alongside Kendrick on this album" but five words ruin it all.

 

Anyway to give so much time to Eminem of all the guests as we are doing doesn't represent how you'd feel after listening to the album as they all seem to do really well and as you say, it showcases years of Dre's involvement in rap and who he's worked with or helped on their way and who he's just introducing. I reckon King Mez and Jon Connor could get big off of this, I was surprised at how Xzibit owned it and also the album's come at a great time in Kendrick's career too. In fact, I think Kendrick's records may well have influenced the direction of the production of the album.

 

I was however disappointed with there being such a little amount of Dre & Snoop together; they've had such a big effect on each other's careers and together crafted one of the best, if not the best rap album of all time so to see Snoop throw in a kinda crap verse on a song not with Dre and just one really good song together on the album seems pants and I think them bouncing off one another throughout the album could have benefitted Dre too but that's one of very complaints.

I can agree with that. I mean, it's an album about a city with a high murder rate so while it's a bit shocking to hear acted out at the end of a rap song, it's just some fiction that goes with the work. Plus I mean would it have registered with anyone if it was a man getting shot? #NotAllDres

Glad to hear that everybody enjoyed the Dre album as much as me. I really thought it was gonna be ridiculous, as obviously all we've had to go off a-la new Dre material has been Kush and I Need A Doctor which were both terrible, but it's fantastic. As has been said above, a really great closure to his career as a rapper. Didn't think he still had it in him

Looking forward to the debut album by Kagoule coming out.

Having caught them at Tramlines, Glastonbury and Ynot it seems a long time coming.

Reviews all reference grunge/post grunge stuff but last time i saw them they had an xx feel too.

maybe one of the vocalists having tonsilitis caused that though!?

At the start of the year I was pretty much most excited for her album and PJ Harvey's but because we've had so many good releases/hadn't heard much on the Newsom or PJ front I'd almost forgotten we were due something! A rare pleasant Monday surprise... cheers Dental

Haven't been there myself Winslow. A friend went for Florence a few months and said it was fairly easy to find and you had a good view of the stage from most areas but I can't remember what they said about the sound.

On another note, I see CHVRCHES have announced a tour with some fairly big venues (MCR Albert Hall, Ally Pally). What slot do people think they'll command next year? JP Headliners/3rd on Other?
