The simple facts are, if you have more people, in a smaller amount of space, it's going to look better, and that's what happens in FLC video. Nobody will ever know official figures from that year, but the capacity was 100,000 and even if you go with a conservative estimate of 200,000 being there, that's still double the amount of people on site that there should have been, in a much smaller space than needed. Add that to the previously mentioned facts of FLC being a Sunday night subheadliner, having just had a massive hit that the majority were aware of, it doesn't take a genius to add it up....

why doesnt the stones crowd look like that then? It was rammed, more rammed than it was for FLC.

the FLC crowd was just full of more up for it people. It's that simple I reckon.

What I'm not saying is that kids shouldnt get on with their parents. What a bizarre assumption that was.

Does the older crowd only listen to neil diamond and leonard cohen then?

Nothing surprises me anymore, especially having spent a few years on this forum.

Not wanting to spend the weekend partying with your parents does not mean that you dont get on with your parents.

Maybe I'm noy going to the 'right' gigs any more, but crowds definitely seem a lot more reserved than even just a few years ago. I remember not being able to stay on my feet at Muse in 2006 - the entire crowd swaying from side to side, and bouncing along. And seeing Arctic Monkeys the same year - I was trying my best to avoid getting caught up in the chaos yet still came out with a missing shoe and tshirt soaked in other peoples sweat.

The closest to that these days is when ive been to see Enter Shikari, or when Kasabian played Fire - which like Floorfiller said - will probably be the big jump about moment of this years festival

Hey I was properly raving to the rip....

I dont think anyone would argue that the crowds at glastonbury are more sedate in general these days would they?

We can either blame the yoof, or we can blame the higher percentage of old farts at glastonbury now.

But considering those people dancing their socks off you mention tend to be the old farts then I think we know the answer...

We've had this argument before though, and I think the conclusion was the yoof that know how to enjoy themselves wouldnt dream of going to the OAPfest that is glastonbury...

I saw the Arctic Monkeys when they first headlined in 2007, and the audience seemed pretty bored for most of their set. From what I heard (I wasn't going to waste another 2 hours on them again!), they went down much better last year.

I think we can all find exceptions for any years, for audiences being both more and less enthusiastic. Half the time, perceptions are down to how much, whoever is giving the opinion, they enjoyed themselves at that time.

average song, average response... could be any year

same again

apart from Scoobie Snacks, there isn't much to make me think I missed anything

Yup, I think it really comes down to your own perception of what's going on for a gig. Where your positioned in the crowd etc.

I actually had a wander when I got to Chic last year. I found the Brothers Bar side of the crowd ..a bit meh where I was first standing, people just standing around chatting/not really into the gig. Anyway I got out the crowd and came in from the right (if your facing the stage) just past the mixing desk and it was really enjoyable singing/dancing crowd around me. That goes to show, I could have an entirely different perception of a great gig.

Though I do think it seems harder to get to the better spots of the crowd. In London and a lot of the time at Festivals over the couple of years. I find there often seems to be ring of people who stand as stiff as statures filming everything but seem to block everyone else from getting involved with the right mad ones at the proper front. I've never been a confident person getting past people at gigs, so maybe its just me arriving later now days than what I used to.

Young people these days just don't have as much fun as we did when we were young.

In other news, it used to all be fields around here and policeman are starting to look a lot younger, aren't they?

I was just watching a video of fun lovin criminals in 1999 I think and the crowd is really active

I'm wondering why the crowd at glastonbury is a lot less like that anymore, you'd never see that at the other stage these days.

I didn't go in the 90s, but from what I've heard there was quite a rebellious, drug fuelled, sometimes violent attitude there, more like you get at R&L or T these days. That wouldn't really be appropriate for parents taking their children would it?

EDIT: In fact, I'd say the fence might have something to do with the more sedate crowds

    • Out of interest (I could look but being lazy), do Mad Cool repeat that quickly? They only played last year
    • This basically!, it's about as clear as day they'll be there.
    • Yeah there is no down time, I'm still tired and over thinking from last weeks work. A big reality check this week. If you just do it for the money you always will.
