The 'I Nearly Died BEFORE The Rolling Stones' Thread

To say that you died at a Rolling Stones gig would be amazing - even more so than actually speaking despite the fact you were dead - but saying you nearly died before they even started is cooler in my opinion.

I was sat over near a chippy stall with my missus whilst Elvis Costello came on. Not a massive fan of Elvis Costello but I wanted to be nearish the front so that I could step through a few gaps and get close for Primal Scream. So I tanked myself up on a heroic dose of whiskey. Luckily, I got within feet of the barrier. Primal Scream were superb - aside from the ugly Scousers who elbowed some guy in the face and it took them twice before they realised nobody wanted them to be there; and the bloody old dears in their chairs...

So anyway, Primal Scream finished. I didn't intend to stick around for the Stones because I wanted to be with my missus whenever she saw her beloved Skrillex but as I tried to get out, all of a sudden a surge of people came crashing in, led by some mad Scottish bloke who was determined to make seemingly every person at Glastonbury see The Stones. Escape was impossible, and that's when the crush began. I had some dude behind me with a camel mask on pushing me into the back of some guy who had a Ninja Turtles backpack on, my diaphragm felt like it was being put through a garlic crusher; couldn't breathe. Then I found myself for 20 minutes with my hands in the air; not through joy or excitement but because that was the last pose I pulled before I had people so close to me I couldn't put my arms back down again; people were practically inside my ribcage. Some dude had a can on the end of the stick that he was using as a flag; being dangled in front of my face... then the crush began again.

I was going back and forth, swaying around, had no idea where I was, who I was even seeing, what I was supposed to be doing, and then all of a sudden, I was up in the air. Next thing I know, I was standing next to the Pyramid stage and had 100,000 Rolling Stones fans behind me. A security guard had plucked me out of the crowd. I caught a bit of breath, ran from one end of the Pyramid to the other, thanked a security guard and then had absolutely no fucking clue where I was.

I stood by the bar over on the left side of the Pyramid stage, had 3 quick fags in succession and then headed back to camp where I met my missus. Sat there for 10 minutes trying to work out what the fuck happened to me.

.......One of the greatest things I've ever experienced in my life :D

I lied down after Primals and nearly passed out near the front. I needed a kick from somebody to get back up. I got really ill, haha. Managed to recover for the Stones, but I definitely drank way too much! I remember nothing from Primal Scream's set apart from Haim coming on for Come Together!

Not nearly dying, but I felt like it

I was in such a great position (right in front of the Golden Circle) but i was standing really awkwardly and my legs were killing me the whole way through the set cause there was this small old lady standing behind me to the left who had a great view and I didn't want to move too much to block her view cause I felt really bad. However I did have a fantastic night regardless.

The thing with that crowd was the variety of different ages in the audience. It was great and everything but to me, if you're going to go down to the front of one of the greatest gigs on earth at the greatest festival on earth, you might want to reconsider taking your chairs. That was thing that astonished me during Primal Scream and before The Stones - the obstacles one had to avoid.

Deep down I'm a considerate person (no matter how pissed I am) - and it's in my nature not to hurt people so I'll try to avoid you as much as possible, and look out for you if you are trying to make your stay as convenient as possible when otherwise I'm happy enough trying to start a mosh pit during Swastika Eyes - but please, don't have a go at everybody behind you who's asking you to move and doing their best to avoid crushing you if you refuse to move from your fucking chair. We're at the front of a 100,000 person crowd, I'm holding the fuckers back so I don't fall on you, destroy your face and get my spine crushed. Keep your head, lose your camping chair, maintain your balance. Don't care how old (or young) you are, you bring your chair to the front of a crowd at a high energy rock concert, you're fucked.

Chairs need to be banned on main stage fields. simple. You're not going to have as much space as you did mid afternoon when the main acts come on. It's simply fucking annoying. If there's a genuine reason you need one, go sit at the back.

The amount of baggies and bottles after the Stones set was astonishing (we litterpicked the Pyramid), people must have been absolutely off their faces which would explain the amount of aggro in the crowd, we were 3 people back from the second barrier and it as touch and go at times - pushers-in starting on women, eyes like saucers.

    • New Overmono album is... just good for me. Had high hopes which were later dashed a bit after listening to some of the singles but they brought me back around enough to appreciate some very nice work in there. https://music.apple.com/ie/album/pure-devotion/1894298100
    • I don't really worry about headliners (unless there's a real possibility of a once-in-a-lifetime artist landing for it) but I'm starting to feel a bit cold on the names floating around bar Fontaines.  Harry Styles and Sam Fender, I can see the value and commercially speaking, they've earned it.  Sabrina Carpenter is obviously popular enough to do it - but after she's headlined everywhere else and done Coachella earlier this year, is it not just a bit predictable to follow what other festivals have done?
    • Bollocks to “safe” headliners, bollocks to the masses. Get interesting, get risky, challenge people.
    • The Cure would be a dream, I can definitely see them doing a second run of festivals they may have missed this year and they seem the definitive Latitude act  If they do festivals next year maybe The Strokes could be a shout? Im stunned either them or Kings of Leon haven't played yet This is a great shout for names, youre right that CMAT is taking a year out though - we're like to know more in the autumn when festivals start making announcements  The only other act I'd really love to see is Idles headline the tent
