I think it's mostly in the fact that - whilst it's noble to donate a ton of money to Greenpeace every year and charge people X amount of money for that, charity begins at home, and a lot more festivals, artists who play at them and the record labels/music industry who ultimately determine the cost of festivals should be more aware of the current state of the economy in this country, and subsequently use this awareness to make a concept or product that is universal rather than one that is sold to an increasingly secular audience of those who worry about whether or not they can afford it.

Basically, festivals should be cheaper for the common man (or woman) to enjoy.

Oddly, they could vaccinate the badgers but that was deemed to expensive...I have a sneaking suspicion they might live to find out they are wrong. Badgers aren't as dumb as they look. The large Male that lives in the woods near me can be a right menace for a so called "reclusive creature" but no-one has yet manage to corner the little sod and take him out (council have tried). He had a go at my Terrier a while back luckily the stupid lump dog scared it off before it could do much more than a few scratches. They are pretty creatures mind. Until you disturb them or hit them in a car. (Although not as bad and the bloody deer).

He who is without sin cast the first stone I guess.

No one is perfect, I'm pretty sure all the PETA die hard vegetarian vegan feminists have done something controversial. Stop expecting everyone to be so clean when you're dirty yourself.

Yeah, but companies aren't allowed to cut off water supplies anymore even if you don't pay your bill. I hate the whole sanctioning and workfare regime as much as anyone, and do some debt work and welfare rights stuff along with counselling, but I don't agree with turning against even poorer people to tackle it.

Indeed. I've done similar sort of work in the voluntary sector.

I'd love to see the day whenever a free festival is made solely for the unemployed. In fact, not just the unemployed but the disabled too, and people who can't claim certain benefits based on the fact they have been on benefits so long that they hadn't made any NI contributions and were therefore not entitled to anything. We'll even have a MASSIVE family camping section, and a VIP section for non-English speakers.

We'll call it DWPFest and find sponsorship from the Citizens Advice Bureau and Samaritans. Be the most popular festival in the the UK.

I'd exterminate head lice if I had them. I would get rid of rats and mice eating holes in my food.

I'd cull badgers if they were going to threaten my herd and livelihood. What's the problem?

However, that said I haven't read the research on either argument so cannot support or deny what the OP is saying. But if I owned a dairy farm and my neighbour had lost 500 cows I'd make sure I did read it so I could make an informed decision. I think the OP would be tiring herself out with these kind of arguments if she involves herself with every issue along these lines. Its important to gain more knowledge in any given area before jumping in feet first like she has. Is it just this article that has elicited this response or has she read into this and studied TB and badger populations in depth? Would be interested to know what has driven this.

Badgers aside, I like the bit where it says "In the early days, he let in people who were skint or unemployed for nothing". Poignant.

Whenever I was lucky enough to get through and put the deposit down on the tickets, I phoned up my older sister who'd always wanted to go to Glastonbury and told her that I'd bought her a ticket. I won't tell a sob story but she had a shitty year last year - probably moreso than most people I've ever known - and has pretty much been left with nothing, trying to rebuild her life and so on. So when I said to her, "I'm looking at the confirmation page for 3 tickets to Glastonbury and I got one for you - don't pay me back." she was in tears and couldn't believe it. So I paid for the deposit, then paid for her ticket in full in April, and then come resale it turned out she couldn't go because it suddenly dawned on her that she was "skint and unemployed" - couldn't afford food or drink etc, nor could swallow her pride and ask me to help her pay for it. She's not going to Glastonbury now.

Can't imagine Eavis' Methodism will stretch so far as to take into account the feelings of the common people like he did "in the early days". Just a thought.
